Qing Lang Shining - White Crane Diagram
Color on silk 121cmx63cm
Collection of the National Palace Museum in Taipei
Created in the sixteenth year of Qianlong (1751), "White Crane Diagram" is one of the most outstanding works of Lang Shining's perfect combination of Chinese and Western painting methods.
The white eagle in the main body of the picture is depicted in white powder, inheriting European painting techniques, paying attention to the anatomy of objects, light and shadow effects and three-dimensional sense, and portraying the long-awaited white eagle with realistic shapes; while the turquoise in the background is completely using Chinese freehand brush and ink, clear stream stone rock, proud pine standing. With its unique artistic conception, timeless expression techniques and natural scenes, "White Crane Diagram" gives the viewer a great artistic enjoyment, with a far-reaching artistic conception and a thousand thoughts.
Lang Shining (1688-1766), an Italian, was born in Milan, qing Kangxi fifty-four years (1715) to China, immediately entered the palace, once participated in the design of the Yuanmingyuan Western-style building, successively served in the Kang, Yong, Qian three dynasties, engaged in painting in China for more than 50 years. Because Lang Shining brought Western painting techniques and showed the emperor and other court painters the charm of European chiaroscuro, he was successively reused by Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong.
The shape of "White Crane Diagram" is accurate and fine, and the sketch and light and shade effects make the objects in the figure have a relatively strong sense of concave and convex three-dimensional. The curved and coiled pine branches are covered with leaves, the bark is mottled, and the white eagle standing in the center is extremely prominent, and the texture of the feathers is very strong. Chinese painting is not only about treating landscape animals and plants as natural beings, but also about giving the painted objects a certain metaphor.
The pines, eagles, ganoderma lucidum, mountain stones and flowing water depicted in the "White Eagle Diagram" mostly mean strong, long life and auspiciousness in Chinese culture. In terms of color, eagle white, pine green, zhi brown red, tupo color and vine rose pollen purple are also different from the traditional Chinese Lang Shining style of vivid, gorgeous and heavy.
With his rigorous and solid realistic skills, the characteristics of painting that pays attention to chiaroscuro effects, and the overall strong European painting style and mood of his works, He has established his position among the painters of the official court.
