Vincent William van Gogh (1853–1890), Dutch Post-Impressionist painter.
Van Gogh was a pioneer of Expressionism and deeply influenced twentieth-century art, especially Fauvism and German Expressionism. Van Gogh's works, such as Starry Night, Sunflowers, and Wheat Fields with Crows, are now among the world's most recognizable works of art.
Van Gogh only began his career as a painter at the age of about 27; however, in the last decade of his life, he produced about 2100 paintings, including about 860 paintings.
Van Gogh's early works were only in gray and dark colors, until he met Impressionists and Neo-Impressionists in Paris. Van Gogh incorporated their vivid colors and painting styles to create his unique personal painting style, especially during Van Gogh's stay in Arles, France, which has matured. Most of his most famous works were created during the last two years of his life, during which Van Gogh's work was underappreciated, and he was deeply impoverished by mental illness and poverty, which eventually led to his suicide at the age of 37.
