On April 12, a Modern Express reporter learned from the Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Planning and Natural Resources that the planning and design plan for the construction project of Tongliao Residential Building and Tongliao Memorial Hall was publicized before approval. It is reported that the Tongliao Residence will be open to the public after the completion of the building repair. At the same time, the new Tongliao Memorial Hall on the northwest side will be used as a platform for research and display of modern architectural culture after completion.

Together with Yang Tingbao, Liang Sicheng and Liu Dunzhen, Tong Liao is known as the "Four Masters of Architecture" in China, and is an outstanding architect, architectural educator and painter in mainland China. In his early years, he went to the University of Pennsylvania to study in the Department of Architecture, and after returning to China, he designed important buildings such as the former Nanjing National Government Foreign Ministry Building, the Shanghai Grand Theater, and the Capital Hotel. He has made great contributions to the development of modern architecture in mainland China in terms of architectural creation, architectural theory and architectural education, and is a generation of masters of modern architecture in mainland China.

Tongliao Residence is located in Wulao Village Street, Qinhuai District, west to Honghuadi, north to Wenchang Lane, east and south to the existing residential community, covering an area of about 0.04 hectares, with a total construction area of 133 square meters above ground, planned for class II residential land, is a brick and wood two-storey house designed and built by Mr. Tong Liao in 1947. In 2002, it was listed as a cultural relics protection unit in Jiangsu Province. It is understood that the whole system of brick and wood structure buildings of Tongliao Residential Building, the main building is a two-story building in the style of a British villa, using a rough stone wall base, a red brick clear water exterior wall, a sloped roof covered with red flat tiles, and a large area of white glass windows facing south, with sufficient natural lighting. There is a gatehouse on the north side, and the house is surrounded by a courtyard with various flowers and trees.
On the afternoon of April 12, a Modern Express reporter came to No. 52 Wenchang Lane, a residence hidden in the city, an old-fashioned clear-water walled building, boxy. The various flowers and trees in the courtyard grow vigorously, revealing the walls and making spring. Entering from the Honghuadi community, behind the "Tongliao Residential Building Repair and Tongliao Memorial Hall Construction Project Planning and Design Plan Pre-approval Announcement", the reporter saw a bamboo forest and the west wall of the Tongliao residence, according to the general plan schematic map, this bamboo forest will be built as the Tongliao Memorial Hall in the future.
The interior is already under protection and repair
Subsequently, the reporter came to the east side of the residence, climbed the platform of the residential building, and could clearly see the north façade of the residence, the sloped roof was covered with red flat tiles, and there were several glass windows facing east. At present, the house is surrounded by fences, and there are already some sand and gravel, construction tools and so on inside. It is reported that the repair work has begun.
Tong Ming, a professor at the School of Architecture of Southeast University, is the grandson of Tong Liao, and this small courtyard carries many memories of his childhood. When Tong Liao died, Tong Ming was only 13 years old. "The years before my grandfather's death were his busiest years, and he worked tirelessly, writing articles and doing research, publishing more than a dozen articles in two or three years, and completing many books on the basis of previous accumulation." Tong Ming's impression was that most of the time in those years the family was quiet, because his grandfather always liked to stay in the study and busy, and occasionally friends came to visit him, and the family became lively. In her later years, on her sickbed, Tong Liao was still writing her last book in English, "Southeast Garden Villa", introducing the beauty of classical Chinese gardens to the world.
It is reported that the repair of the old mansion was carried out in accordance with the requirements and standards of the provincial key cultural relics for overall protection and repair, showing the architectural style of Nanjing's modern Republic of China period with its original historical appearance, and opening it to the public after the update. "His bedroom has remained the same since my grandfather's death and we haven't moved. On the northwest side, a new Children's Nest Memorial Hall was built for exhibitions, small activities, and research centers
According to the plan, the northwest side of tongliao residence is planned to build a new tongliao memorial hall, covering an area of about 0.03 hectares, with a total construction area of 281.2 square meters above ground, of which: the first floor construction area is 177.7 square meters, the second floor construction area is 103.5 square meters, the plot ratio is ≤0.82, the building density is ≤52%, the planned use is cultural facility land, the control height of the new building is ≤7 meters, and it is used as a modern architectural culture research and display platform after completion.

The memorial hall was designed by Tong Ming. Tong Ming introduced that the design concept of the memorial hall is mainly in harmony with the historical architectural style of the Tong's residence, and due to the limited space of the site, it has also caused certain challenges to the construction. The substation in the existing site will be hidden by a mask that blends in with the design of the added building, decorated with a vertical grille of the same material as the façade. In the future, some precious manuscripts and other collections of Tongliao will be displayed here, as well as some exhibitions and small cultural activities. "It is also planned to set up a small research center to study the academic content of Tong Liao herself and modern architectural culture." Tong Ming said that in fact, for more than ten years, he and his family have been thinking of repairing and opening the Tong's residence and building a memorial hall to make it play a greater social benefit, and his wish has finally been realized, and he is also very much looking forward to it.
According to the relevant personnel of the construction party Nanjing Historic City Protection and Construction Group Co., Ltd., after the publicity of the Tongliao Memorial Hall, archaeology will be carried out, and then construction will be carried out, and strive to be completed within this year.
