In the last episode, we mentioned "writing", in fact, people often neglect to ask and reflect on the deep-seated questioning and reflection on how to understand the weight of "writing" in the West, the history of Eastern thought, philosophy, scientific thinking system, and Western modern industrial and commercial civilization because we think we are familiar with it.

Our Chinese characters, that is, "ideographic" characters, are created from Cangjie and passed down to today. This point can be said to be unique among human civilizations, which is not only manifested in the continuity of the writing system, but also in the inheritance of the Chinese culture carried by the writing system.

However, unlike the Kanji system. In the long course of thousands of years of Western civilization, its writing system has gradually developed into today's alphabet system, or epithet system.

The reason for this difference between the Eastern and Western writing systems is, to some extent, beyond the scope of a single discussion of anthropology, linguistics, and so on.

Behind this seemingly natural difference in the evolution of the text system is very worthy of our attention. It is even not an exaggeration to say that understanding the reasons, processes, and contexts behind this problem is a "master key" that integrates the history of eastern and Western philosophical thought, understands the cultural differences between the East and the West, and even understands the current world pattern.

Systematic discourse does not seem to be easy.

Among them, the characteristic attributes of ancient Western maritime civilizations and ancient Eastern continental civilizations may have always played a role that cannot be ignored, and to this day, they are also looming. For example, we have an old saying that "all brothers in the four seas" here profoundly reflect the difference in the underlying consciousness of this group's self-perception and civilization interaction.

At the same time, people who believe that they have experience in international business activities or have a legal background must be familiar with the difference between civil law systems and sea law systems. In a sense, commercial rules or legal systems may be a manifestation of various rule paradigms and self-restraint mechanisms in the evolution of civilization, and this manifestation is almost inevitably related to the long-term precipitation of ways of thinking and behavior, and the idea of philosophy as the guiding ideological activity is undoubtedly a kernel-like existence, and the achievements of Modern Industrial and Commercial Civilization in the West cannot be traced back to the various results that are intentionally or unintentionally derived from the development process of philosophical thought.

This seems to signal the question that what seems to be discussing obscure so-called philosophies is not actually taking stock of the past, present, and future of our social life at our fingertips. From this point of view, philosophy is so vivid and concrete, isn't it? How vivid and concrete it is may depend on the tension of our philosophical thinking and the ability of theory to link with practice. And doesn't this correspond to what our ancestors created to remind us: Is everything connected?

A History of Western Philosophy Season 2 Episode 03

Imagine the similarity of hieroglyphic origins, to some extent, one has to ponder a proposition of homology between Eastern and Western cultures. This proposition is too big, and it can only be pointed out here.
