Duccio di Buoninsegna (1255-1319) was born in Siena. From his works, it can be seen that the Gothic tradition of Italian art developed to its peak. A contemporary of Cimabue, considered the founder of the Sienese School, Duccio's work is derived from the Byzantine style, but also incorporates a humanistic spirit into it, making the picture look more imposing. Duccio's greatest work is The Madonna in Majesty (1308–1311 AD, altarpiece). The painting began in 1308 at the behest of the Cathedral of Siena, and in 1311 a grand celebration was held after the completion of the work. However, this masterpiece was later dismembered. Some people cut the woodblock work into several pieces and sold it, so that several museums around the world now have partial fragments of the Virgin and Child Ascending to the Holy See. The Summoning of the Apostles Peter and Andre is an an ornament on the back of The Assumption of the Virgin and Child to the Holy See. The brilliant colors, expressive rock faces, and realistic character depictions all make it seem as if one has seen this holy relic: Andrei and Peter, two fishermen brothers, who fished all night and found nothing, jesus told them to cast a net on the side of the boat. Just unwilling to upset the stranger, the brothers obeyed him. When the net was lifted, it was full of fish. The brothers were suspicious and seemed to have some understanding of this.
