At 23:00 Beijing time on March 23, 2022, with the chairman of the 3GPP RAN plenary meeting announcing the end of the 95th plenary session, the formulation of the 3GPP 5G Rel-17 standard was successfully completed.

It is expected that in the near future, 5G networks will support more industries and applications with stronger capabilities and more intelligence, and integrate more deeply into society for the benefit of all mankind.

CITIC Mobile actively participates in the formulation of the 3GPP 5G Rel-17 standard, and actively inputs a large number of key technical solutions in multiple directions. At the same time, on the REL-17 SA/CT side, CITIC Mobile also served as a reporter on a number of topics related to the two directions of location services and proximity communication, and took the lead in the standard development of the SA and CT working group systems; on the Rel-17 RAN side, CITIC KeMobil served as a reporter on topics such as high-precision positioning, uplink compression, AND RAN4 CSI-RS/RRM/V2X/CA enhancement, and continued to lead the integration of the Mainland Beidou 3 satellite navigation system and the 5G standard.

For the first time, support for satellite access has been realized, allowing 5G networks to cover "farther" places;

For the first time, the 5G network has become an important part of the UAV flight control system, extending the flight range of the UAV;

For the first time, direct communication between terminals is supported, and the network load is unloaded while expanding new business scenarios.

For the first time, the support of broadcast multicast services has been realized, so that 5G networks can efficiently transmit audio and video programs;

For the first time, a private network is provided on a public network platform, allowing enterprise users to have their own dedicated mobile communication network, making it possible to "privately customized" 5G networks.

At the same time, the Rel-17 network has been enhanced for existing features, such as network intelligence, network slicing, edge computing, location services, and so on.

Dr. Zeng Erlin, chief representative of CITIC Mobile's 3GPP RAN, said that from the perspective of wireless access networks, the Rel-17 standard covers performance enhancement, vertical field and scenario, and networking optimization.

Performance enhancements:

Enhancements to large-scale antenna technologies, such as multi-TRP, beam management enhancements, and beam quality-based mobility enhancements, continued to be enhanced, efficiency and latency optimizations have been made for dual-connection and multi-carrier activation, mobility management, and network coverage and terminal energy savings have been further enhanced.

Vertical and scenario-based aspects:

The Rel-17 standard covers a wide range of content, such as the introduction of low-complexity terminals to accelerate the penetration of 5G terminals, and the enhancement of pass-through links, trunks, etc. to improve performance and expand application scenarios.

At the same time, high-precision positioning, industrial Internet of Things, and satellite networks are also continuing to evolve, by continuing to enhance link performance, latency, mobility and robustness to improve the availability of these technologies in real scenarios, and accelerate the landing of the 5G industry.

Networking optimization:

Rel-17 has initially carried out the exploration of artificial intelligence technology, such as preliminary research on the requirements of network interfaces and data interactions; SON/MDT network optimization and slice management functions continue to be enhanced; in addition, it has also carried out enhancements to flexible topologies such as IAB and smart repeater.

On the basis of the previous two versions of the 5G NR standard, the Rel-17 standard continues to evolve in the direction of "stronger", "better" and "more specialized".
