The poetry of urban planning

Interview with Luo Jun, Director of the Institute of Urbanization Strategy and Architecture of Sichuan University: History and culture are the soul of the city and an important recognition of the value of the city; while philosophy and aesthetics are the methodology and supreme law of good urban planning.

In 2021, Luo Jun joined the School of Architecture and Environment of Sichuan University and established the Institute of Urbanization Strategy and Architecture at Sichuan University. The first thing he did in Chengdu, he first went to Tianfu New District, Eastern New District and High-tech Zone to walk a few laps, as an architect, using practical experience to measure the urban space he will take root in, measuring the streets of the city with his footsteps, and establishing a scale between space and imagination. For Luo Jun, this was a natural thing.

Find the "charm of time" in the city

In the mid-1990s, Luo Jun went to the United Kingdom to study, and every weekend he would drive to various towns to visit and investigate, reflecting the scenery and reality of the literary works he read as a teenager, Dickens, Woolf... Most of the streets in the works of the great Masters of English Literature are still in their original places, retaining their original appearance. He was amazed at how well Britain's countryside and cities were combined. "In 2003, I graduated with a PhD, worked for a very prestigious British engineering consultancy in the world, and returned to China to participate in the Olympic project. In 2012, I joined the China Academy of Building Research, and in the past decade I have been involved in a number of projects and have seen some changes in China's urbanization in the last 20 years. ”
