Thomas Kegler (1970-), a self-taught American contemporary realist painter and artistic mentor, comes from a large family of artists. His traditional oil painting landscapes were inspired by the woods and hills of his hometown of west New York, as well as the Catskill Mountains and the majestic mountains of Alaska and Oregon. His depictions of these places were strongly influenced by the Old Masters and the Hudson River School.

These quiet and magnificent pictures come from the painter's in-depth observation and feeling of nature, and they are like pastoral songs, washing our eyes and hearts. Kegler's picture selection is usually based on medium and long-range scenes, and the viewer's gaze extends to the distance with his guidance, at the horizon of the eye position, shining, dawn and dusk, giving it the most grand color.

In a 2013 interview with the cover story of Painting magazine, Kegler said: "A dead tree has as much beauty as a living tree. What inspires me might just be the shape of a tree or a piece of wood on the ground. The same goes for the whole landscape – there is beauty in neglected places. The good thing about creating landscapes is that you have so much stage to take advantage of – you can work on an intimate level and on a broad level that you often don't have when painting still lifes or figures. "
In a statement of his own, Kegler further elaborated on his creative process. "When I study a maple tree in the field, I want my work to pay homage to that particular tree — not to all of them. I needed to explore what made the tree grow into its unique shape – the light, the surroundings, the weather, the soil, the environment. I investigate what I see in order to 'understand' what I draw with an anatomic sense. "

Kegler studied art at Buffalo State University College, graduating in 1993 with a bachelor's degree in graphic design and a master's degree in art education in 1999. He has served as an instructor and curriculum coordinator at the East Aurora Public School System in East Aurora, NY. In 2007, he created artwork for singer-songwriter Ani Di Franco on her Best Compilation album canon on The Straight Babe Records.

Thomas is recognized as a quasi-life master by the Center for The Revival of the Arts; Master Roycroft; a member of the Salmagondi Club in New York; a painting director at the Central Studio in New York City; and a senior fellow at the Hudson River Research Society. His work has been featured in galleries, collections, and publications around the world, including Plein Air magazine and American Art Quarterly. Kegler teaches workshops throughout Western New York, reviews the work of other artists, judges group exhibitions, and organizes art-related events. He also produced a self-produced instructional documentary, Plein Air Painting, Solving Landscape Problems.
