On this day of universal celebration, I want to talk about a question that makes people wonder: Why do women always drive badly?
But as an adult who has received a full nine years of compulsory education, when faced with such a problem, you should abide by a certain code of conduct: first ask whether it is or not, and then ask why; only talk about the whole, not about individual cases; believe in objective statistics, and refuse to raise the bar emptyly.
So, are women always driving badly?
I found two statistics on the basis of this problem.
The first is the incidence of traffic accidents.
According to the "Characteristics and Trends of Traffic Accident Crimes (2016.1-2019.12)" released by the China Judicial Big Data Research Institute, statistics on traffic accident perpetrators show that nearly 95% of the defendants of traffic accident crimes are men, and the average 10,000-person incidence rate of male drivers is 8.8 times that of female drivers. Note that the "10,000-person incidence rate" is a "rate" and has nothing to do with the base.
The second is driving habits.
According to the "2016Q2 Traffic Analysis Report of Major Cities in China" released by AutoNavi in 2016, female drivers' driving habits are generally better than those of men, although the frequency of sharp turns is significantly higher, but the frequency of sharp acceleration, sharp braking and speeding is lower.
Is it because the female driver is driving slowly, so there is no need to accelerate and brake sharply? No. Statistics from the same report show that the average speed of female drivers is only slightly slower than that of male drivers.
Of course, the above data is not enough to prove how high the level of driving is for female drivers, but at least it can be proved that they are not driving as badly as they think.
So the problem we're discussing may need to be changed. Why do we always think women can't drive well?
First, there is a considerable degree of reporting bias in the media.
From the data just now, we already know that the traffic accident rate of male drivers is much higher than that of women. But when I searched for "male driver" on Baidu, there were 36.2 million search results, and "female drivers" had 100 million search results. And the 100 million here is not an accurate count, but the upper limit of Baidu's search results number - search for "drivers", which is also 100 million results.
For some media, the "female driver" in the headline seems to be some kind of traffic password. After the Chongqing Wanzhou bus crash accident in 2018, when the truth had not yet been ascertained, many media and netizens said conclusively that the accident was caused by the female driver of the car retrograde. Later, the police issued a police intelligence notice and on-site monitoring proved that the car was in a normal driving state at the time of the incident.
Secondly, the proportion of female drivers is higher.
The latest release of the "Car Understanding Emperor Female Car Survey Report" quoted data from the Ministry of Public Security, since 2017, the number of newly licensed female drivers has been increasing, and the growth rate is more than twice that of male drivers.
According to the Ministry of Public Security, by 2021, there will be 480 million motor vehicle drivers. Among them, 319 million male drivers, accounting for 66.32%, and female drivers 162 million, accounting for 33.68%. In 2017, there were 274 million male drivers and 111 million female drivers nationwide.
That is to say, 31% of all female drivers on the road are now under four years of driving age, compared with only 14% of male drivers. In other words, the probability of female drivers on the road being novices and prospective novices is more than twice that of male drivers.
It's not so much that female drivers drive poorly as it is that the level of novices is low.
In the end, we seem to acquiesce that driving is a man's business. This part is not supported by data, but it should be in line with the daily experience of most people.
The word "female driver" appears precisely because the word "driver" is considered male by default, so female drivers are a special minority. When several people ride in the same car, it is always driven by a man. In the family, the hostess always drives the second car of the family.
This perception coincides with the statement that "girls are not suitable for science and engineering".
Going back further, when we picked out gifts for children, we always picked soft dolls for girls, and a variety of cars only appeared in the "Boys' Toys" section.
At this point, we can temporarily draw a conclusion: "women driving poorly" is a misunderstanding, and the reason for this misunderstanding is that women's traffic accident news is more eye-catching, there are more novices among female drivers, and women have fewer opportunities to drive.
In the matter of driving, there is only a difference between proficiency and non-skill, and there is no absolute gender difference. To achieve gender equality, it is not only necessary for the whole society to put aside prejudice, but also for some female drivers to no longer use "female drivers" as an excuse for technical incompetence, and no longer use car stickers like the following picture as a "talisman" for rampage.
That's why I got the title of this article.
"Female drivers" should have the same rights and the ability to assume the same obligations. The differential treatment of "female drivers" is not gentlemanly, but the disapproval of women's abilities, which is unfair to other female drivers.
