Samsung Electronics said today that the company has suspended deliveries to Russia in light of current geopolitical trends. After Russia launched a special military operation against Ukraine last week, more and more companies, from Apple to Microsoft, stopped selling products and services in Russia.
Samsung said in an emailed statement that the company is actively monitoring the development of this complex situation. People familiar with the matter said Samsung has suspended all exports to Russia, from chips to smartphones and consumer electronics. "We care about all those affected. Our priority is to ensure the safety of all our employees and their families. Samsung said. Samsung also said it would donate $6 million to humanitarian operations in Ukraine, including $1 million in consumer electronics.
Samsung currently holds a leading position in the Russian smartphone market with a market share of just over 30%, and Sales of Russian smartphones account for 4% of its global smartphone revenue. According to a report released by Hana Financial Investment Corporation, Samsung's semiconductor sales in Russia account for less than 0.1% of its total semiconductor revenue. In addition, Samsung has a TV production plant in Kaluga, Russia.
Brad Smith, Microsoft's president and chief legal officer, also announced on the blog platform yesterday that Microsoft will suspend the sale of all new products and services in Russia in order to comply with government sanctions.
Microsoft said it is working closely with the U.S., European Union and U.K. governments to stop many businesses in Russia and do more as the situation develops.
It is reported that Microsoft said it will protect Ukraine's cybersecurity and help Ukrainian cybersecurity officials defend against Russian attacks. It has taken steps against more than 20 cyber operations in Russia.
In addition, Microsoft's Philanthropy and UN Affairs team is working closely with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and a number of UN agencies to help refugees by providing technical and financial support to key NGOs.
Previously, Microsoft had removed the mobile app of Russia Today, Russia Today, from the Windows 11/10 app store and banned advertising on Russian government-backed media.
