As Ukraine fended off a Russian invasion, the lights dimmed across the country.
Before the Russian-Ukrainian conflict on February 24, nighttime satellite imagery captured bright lights in Kiev, Kharkiv, Rivnor Oblast and other urban areas. Now, the same image shows a country that has fallen into darkness.
We compared the average nighttime light landscape in Ukraine from January to February 25 (the night after the conflict began) and found that there was a significant reduction in light across the country.
Part of it is strategic – in Lviv, the authority issued a city-wide lights-out as a security measure to prevent full-blown sleepfall.
Comparing nighttime lighting can also reveal where unusual ground activity is taking place. Satellite imagery from Feb. 28 showed new light sources emerging in the west and north of Kiev, possibly due to a 40-mile Russian military convoy massing to prepare to approach the city.
In modern combat, light can play a vital role in military strategy.
"I think it's crazy for Russians to have lights on," said Jeffrey Lewis, an arms control expert and professor at Middlebury's School of International Studies. "This picture is very striking — it seems to indicate that the light discipline of the Russian army is very poor."
Lewis believes this could be due to a lack of equipment or a lack of nighttime training.
According to the U.S. military's assessment, the Russian-Ukrainian conflict is the world's largest conventional military attack in nearly 80 years. Modern technologies such as satellite imagery will continue to play a key role in understanding how war unfolds.
