In July 1997, the local cultural protection department in Cangzhou excavated 48 tons of iron money on the ruins of the old city of Cangzhou. Because of their age, these iron coins rusted and glued into an iron lump. Archaeologists have cleared out Song Dynasty coins such as "Chongning Tongbao" and "Zhenghe Tongbao", according to which they are speculated to have been minted during the Northern Song Dynasty.

In 2011, archaeologists excavated tons of iron money half a meter underground just 500 meters from the original land. In addition, two Song Dynasty architectural sites were also found in this excavation, and three triads were found in the ruins area specifically for the construction of the mansion and the city wall.
The placement of iron money is more regular, which shows that these iron money are deliberately placed and not buried in a hurry. According to the conclusions of the two archaeological discoveries, this area is likely to be a warehouse for storing iron coins during the Song Dynasty. Such a large amount of iron money was unearthed in Cangzhou, which shows that it was very common to use iron money in this area at that time, and the local minting of iron money was also quite large-scale, which to a certain extent shows that Cangzhou has a very high economic status, and the minting process is skilled. This also shows that there are most likely stoves and kiln sites for minting iron coins near the land where iron money is produced, which requires further archaeological excavations.
Iron money is generally believed to be used in the more economically developed south, and the north is rarely unearthed. At that time, the Sichuan Plain was the main circulation area of iron money, and later because the iron money was too heavy, the merchants were inconvenient to carry and had paper money "Jiaozi". It is rare to find such a large amount of iron money in Cangzhou, Hebei Province, which also shows that the economic development level of Cangzhou during the Northern Song Dynasty was high, and the circulation of goods and goods was very frequent.
