Technological innovation, including the number of invention patents owned by 10,000 people.

Chen Yao, a researcher at the Institute of Industrial Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences and president of the Zhengzhou National Central City Research Institute, believes that key indicators such as the ratio of R&D expenditure to regional GDP and the number of "double-first-class" disciplines can reflect a city's real innovation ability.
However, some indicators are "not necessary", affecting the "purity" of evaluation. For example, one of the driving forces of innovation includes the average annual concentration of PM2.5, the actual use of foreign capital per capita, and the energy consumption per unit of regional GDP.
In the report, Zhengzhou ranked 68th in the average concentration of PM2.5 in 2019, with a per capita disposable income of 40, which is directly related to the 45th place in the innovation driving force ranking.
