On October 18, Wu Xiaolin, president of China University of Petroleum (Beijing), said in an interview with this reporter that he will actively build a "Belt and Road" energy university cooperation platform, lead domestic and foreign energy universities to carry out comprehensive and pragmatic cooperation, and shoulder the responsibility of energy universities with the strong support of governments.

China Electric Power News: The theme of the second "Belt and Road" Energy Ministers' Conference is "Working Together towards a Greener and More Inclusive Energy Future". What impressed you at the conference?

Wu Xiaolin: At present, green development has become an important concept for high-quality joint construction of the "Belt and Road". At this conference, we saw that the "Belt and Road" energy partnership is constantly expanding, and has gradually become a platform for high-quality cooperation in the energy field under the framework of the "Belt and Road", which is bound to promote pragmatic cooperation between countries more effectively.

Universities in the field of energy play an irreplaceable and important role in promoting energy cooperation along the "Belt and Road". I noted that more than 30 universities participated in the conference, many of which have many new practices in green energy transformation and have achieved remarkable results in serving the "Belt and Road" energy cooperation.

China University of Petroleum (Beijing) joined the "Belt and Road" energy partnership cooperation network and became the leader of the university (youth) working group, which is a new opportunity for the development of the school. Wu Xiaolin: The high-quality development of the "Belt and Road" is a huge opportunity for young people, but it is also accompanied by challenges. The world is changing all the time, and how young people adapt to the changing situation and realize their personal value in the process of serving the sustainable development of mankind requires the joint efforts of schools and students.

For industry-specific colleges and universities that are deeply involved in the energy field, it is necessary to provide better learning programs for the young generation so that students can play a role in a low-carbon, green and sustainable energy system. For students, to strive to adapt to the uncertainties of the future, it is necessary to continuously improve their learning ability, adaptability and scientific insight, so as to make their own contribution to the sustainable development of mankind and the cause of energy.

China Electric Power News: Carbon neutrality is gradually rising to a global goal. Can you talk about your school's plans and ideas for implementing the dual carbon target?

Wu Xiaolin: Under the goal of "double carbon", the global energy structure is facing profound adjustment, and the development of the energy industry is accelerating its transformation in the direction of clean, low-carbon, intelligent and electrified.

As the main force of basic research and the source of major scientific and technological innovation, colleges and universities should thoroughly implement the national "double carbon" strategy, accelerate the construction of a carbon-neutral scientific and technological innovation system and talent training system, focus on improving the ability of scientific and technological innovation and the training level of innovative talents, and provide scientific and technological support and talent guarantee for the realization of the "double carbon" goal.

China University of Petroleum (Beijing) actively responds to the national "double carbon" goal and energy transformation requirements, and at the beginning of the "14th Five-Year Plan", it has made a transformation in the target vision, that is, by the end of the "14th Five-Year Plan", the discipline of clean and low-carbon energy has reached the world-class level, and basically built a world-class research university with distinctive characteristics in the field of energy.

On the one hand, the system optimizes the layout of disciplines, innovates and develops the traditional advantageous disciplines of petroleum and petrochemicals, and focuses on the layout of artificial intelligence, robotics, hydrogen energy, geothermal, natural gas hydrates, carbon capture and storage, energy storage materials, energy economic management and other disciplines.
