Fuzhou is an 84-year-old "shou artist" who has adhered to lacquer art for more than 70 years

"Raw paint is easy to use, I have made paint for a lifetime, we do not adulterate." As one of the three treasures of Fuzhou, lacquerware has a history of hundreds of years, and each finished product has to go through dozens of processes, which is extremely complex, and there are not many practitioners now. The 84-year-old Qiu Hengming, who is now 84 years old, has always insisted on the road of hand-made lacquer art since the age of 13 and has never stopped.

Craftsmanship: More than 70 years of practice, a trick "golden worm" has been widely praised

13 years old is not the best age to learn art from a teacher, but the decision to start making lacquer at the age of 13 has affected Qiu Hengming's life.

The 84-year-old Qiu Hengming is an old craftsman in Fuzhou who has been engaged in lacquer art for more than 70 years.

In 1956, at the age of 20, Qiu Hengming began to learn xiū (髹) techniques with Li Zhiqing, a famous lacquer master on the mainland. "There used to be a Japanese businessman who went all the way from Shanghai to Fuzhou for three years, and no one would be a 'gold worm'. At that time, I thought that this was similar to the red treasure sand method that my master taught us, so I told him that "you can try it", and he was very satisfied after doing it. Qiu Hengming proudly told reporters about this special experience.

The production of "golden worm" belongs to the late stage of lacquer art, and its magic lies in the formation of insect-like patterns. This pattern is not hand-drawn and is quite creative. It is precisely with the special technique of "Golden Worm Zhangjiao" that Qiu Hengming has received many overseas orders.

Stick to it: "I have no other hobbies than making paint"

After retiring from his job, Qiu Hengming, who could have enjoyed his old age at home, did not want to give up his craft, and founded the Mingde Lacquer Art Factory on Hongtang Ancient Street in Jianxin Town, recruiting disciples and continuing to stick to the road of lacquer art.

Today, only 5 apprentices remain in Qiu Hengming's factory, including many "old disciples" who have been following for more than 30 years. Qiu Hengming said that making lacquer is an ascetic, and each piece of lacquerware must go through about thirty-two processes to be completed. Dozens of apprentices had been received before, but most of them have now changed careers.

"From my family to my grandson's generation, four generations have been making lacquer." Qiu Hengming said while using the corner mound on the board to mix the lime powder with raw lacquer, and after mixing it well, he began the step of repairing the paint.

Qiu Hengming said that some factories will now add chemical paint to the raw paint to reduce costs, and the skin of workers is not easy to be allergic. When asked why he insisted on using only raw lacquer, Qiu Hengming explained, "Raw lacquer is easy to use, I have done lacquer art for a lifetime, we do not adulterate." ”

"He's in the factory 366 days a year." A female apprentice in the factory told reporters that they were in the factory for 8 hours a day, and Qiu Hengming only had more than them, not less than them. At this time, another female apprentice behind Qiu Hengming also quickly added: "He doesn't do [paint] for a day, he is uncomfortable." Hearing this, Qiu Hengming explained: "I have no other hobbies besides making lacquer. ”

Inheritance: Fortunately, there are people who are willing to give it to each other

Outside Qiu Hengming's factory building, the reporter did not see any eye-catching signs. After entering, the brick and tile house on the left is the "workshop" he has to stay in every day, which looks old and quaint. The three-story building directly opposite the main door is Qiu Hengming's home, and the hall on the first floor displays many completed lacquer works, and Qiu Hengming's grandson is packaging the completed lacquer art.

For his present, Qiu Hengming is very satisfied, he said that his technique has apprentices willing to learn, and his children and grandchildren are also willing to engage in this industry and pass on the craft, which makes him very happy. For the technique of "Golden Worm Zhang", Qiu Hengming has never been stingy.

"I'm older now, and as long as I have the skills, I'm willing to teach others, and I don't worry about being taught my skills by others." Elder Qiu said.
