Biography

Liu Xin, born in 1970, is a native of Decheng District. He is now a member of the International Association of CeramicIsts, a ceramic artist in Shandong Province, and the inheritor of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Ceramic Seal Project in Dezhou. Liu Xin has studied the art of engraving porcelain, and his works are elegant in style and profound in artistic conception. Combining the glaze color process with the engraved porcelain, the original use of gold and stone techniques has created a new look of ceramic ice and snow landscape painting. The creation of his ceramic seal draws on the style of Yu Chun, pays attention to the division of lines and corners, and is known as Liu's porcelain seal. The colorful process developed by the company has won the national invention patent.

On March 16, the reporter walked into the Liangzi Black Pottery Cultural Park in Dezhou, Shandong Province, located in Decheng District, and came to Liu Xin's porcelain-making studio, just in time for the porcelain to come out of the kiln.

More than 10 kinds of glaze colors of the "beauty" that have just come out of the kiln are added, the colors are brilliant, the texture is intricate, and the transition between the peaches is natural and quite flexible. This is Liu Xin's work "Fruit peach rhyme", which was praised by Qiu Chunlin, director of the Institute of Arts and Crafts of the China Academy of Arts, as "a model of natural pattern and color glaze decoration". The work won the first place in the ceramic category of the 2021 China Tibet Association Thousand Cups and Thousand Cups Competition.

The beauty of "Fruit and Peach Rhyme" comes from "a colorful production process", which won the national invention patent in 2018. "The colorful process has realized the 'cross-border' integration of pottery and lacquer art." Liu Xin explained. In the traditional lacquer craft of the mainland, there is a kind of lacquerware, scientific name rhinoceros skin, the surface is smooth, but the texture is layered and layered, and the markings float, showing a strange and unpredictable beauty. Liu Xin said he found inspiration from this craft, grafting the craft of rhinoceros lacquerware to pottery

In the porcelain decoration, the experiment that lasted for 3 years was finally successful, and it was named Colorful Color, taking the meaning of the glaze color effect as colorful and brilliant.

"This process requires firing multiple times, producing thickness through dozens of times of accumulation of different color glazes, and then polishing the desired pattern, which is a new color glaze decoration technique." Liu Xin said.

The difficulty of this process is that it requires 4 times into the kiln - 3 vegetarian burns, 1 glaze burn. One-time sintering is easy to glaze, it is difficult to polish, Liu Xin boldly tried to interrupt firing, through vertical line, plain firing, rough grinding, fine grinding, and finally glaze kiln conjures up a unique texture pattern. However, the glaze is very fragile, and due to the different shrinkage ratios, it is very easy to crack after interrupting the heating. "For a long time, when the kiln door was opened, the hands trembled, and as soon as the kiln door was opened, it was almost all waste, and the efforts of the whole cycle were in vain." Liu Xin said when recalling the arduous creative process. However, because he was intoxicated with color, he did not give up lightly, and went to Zibo and Jingdezhen to consult experts and constantly improve the experimental formula and improve stability. After 3 years of research, he found the key variable that restricted the stability of this process, and by adjusting the vitreous content in the emulsion glaze, the process tended to mature. "At that time, the damage rate of large bottles was as high as 80%, and later after expert guidance, it was found that the material used was too good, and after switching to mud with high sand content, the problem was solved." Liu Xin added.

During the firing process, the glaze is generally not more than 1 mm, otherwise there will be problems such as cracking and foaming. There are as many colors as there are in ceramics, and there are as many layers of glaze color as there are, which makes Liu Xin have to face the thickness of the glaze. But he achieved glaze-thick cracking by adjusting the recipe and firing multiple times. Ms. Wilma, President of the International Ceramics Association, commented: "You are a genius, and the glaze you apply is incredible. ”

Liu Xin's "Great Instrument • Warring States Red" draws the sun totem and dongba pictogram symbols of the ancient Honghuang in the shape of a large bowl, the glaze color is expressed in the classic red, yellow and black colors of lacquerware, and a deep red color in the interlaced stacking of the pattern is memorable, the work won the gold medal of the Magnolia Cup of the Shanghai International Ceramics Exposition in 2016; the work "Great Instrument • Sancai Tang Yun" is decorated with Tang Sancai's ochre, green and white, decorated with earth yellow, the shape of the vessel selects the style of the bowl, and carefully designs 3 divisions, which have the meaning of heaven, earth and sea. The color is magnificent and calm, and the work won the gold medal of the 6th Land Awards sponsored by the China Pottery Association in 2016.
