The two protagonists in the movie "I Can Speak", a nosy "ghost grandmother" played by Ms. Luo Wenji, and a "principled man" who has the dream of an architect but has become a grade 9 civil servant, live in two parallel worlds, but because the most wonderful fate between people intersects.
The seemingly nosy "ghost grandmother" gives people the feeling of being spicy and difficult, but in fact, the heart is full of holes. Because she was forced to be a comfort woman when she was young, she suffered heavy trauma in her heart, once sought death, was saved by a friend, and the two supported each other through a long time. Because she felt that it was a shameful thing to be a comfort woman, the "ghost grandmother" agreed with her mother to bury this painful past and try to live a normal life. After all, in the social environment at that time and even now, people were not so tolerant, and we did not give those who had been injured enough courage to speak the most secret past in their hearts freely, and they did not have to carry this heavy shackle and live openly in the sun.
The most touching thing about this film is that "Ghost Grandma" hides the identity of the comfort woman, walking alone through such a long dark time. He has not been treated tenderly by this world, but he has never given up loving this world. This is perhaps the most attractive thing about "Ghost Grandma". She actively petitions, does not hesitate to offend the neighbors around her, and becomes the object that everyone avoids, but in her heart, it is never for herself, she is just lonely, she just wants to establish contact with people, she wants to make the people around her live better.
Perhaps because everyone is lonely in their hearts, people and talents will get close to each other and warm each other. The world is too busy for anyone to take the time to explore the inner world of a stranger and to pay attention to another person's joys and sorrows. This Korean film reminds me of the documentary "Twenty-Two" of the same type in my country. Comfort women are the victims of the tide of the times, the scars and memories left by the war to the world, we are not willing to touch, to mention, but do not want to uncover the scars that seem to be scabs, but are actually unhealed. The Korean film "I Can Speak" and the Chinese documentary "Twenty-Two" both tell stories about comfort women. The feelings that the two give viewers are very different.
The documentary "Twenty-Two" gives people the feeling of being somewhat depressed and dull, and the rest of the comfort women's lives are mostly silent, like a silent black and white image. These survivors, who had experienced the brutal devastation, lived the rest of their lives in peace. Not too many people pay attention to their sorrows and joys, and they themselves just bury their wounds and live a life that seems to be no different from ordinary people. Such old people are distressed, they are silent, and the world is happy to see this silence, as if as long as everyone does not mention it, the pain will be forgotten, and all the harm will disappear. This is nothing more than self-deception.
The movie "I Can Say" is different, the protagonist of the film, Ms. Luo, as a comfort woman who has experienced the injuries of war, also tried to bury the painful memories in the first half of her life, and originally wanted to obey the agreement with her mother and dust off her past experiences, so that she did not have to accept strange eyes from the outside world and could live a simple and ordinary life. The identity of the comfort woman seems to be a disgrace, an ugly imprint of the body, and it is hidden as deeply as possible, until the years dilute it, and no one knows it again, no one mentions it again.
However, the pain cannot be hidden, it is like a scab wound, even if the surface has healed, but in the heart, if the pain continues to ferment, it will brew bitter wine in the heart. The person concerned can never live a frank life, because the pain in his heart always reminds himself from time to time. In the end, Ms. Luo chose to be brave enough to speak up for herself and let the world hear. In fact, comfort women are victims of wartime times, and they don't have to be ashamed of themselves. Live openly, live positively, no matter what you have experienced, it is beautiful to be alive. Only by facing it directly, only by pouring out and speaking up for yourself, can all the pain be exported.
