Shutting down open virtual spaces, Microsoft strengthens AltspaceVR privacy management

On February 17, Qingting Network reported that with Meta being exposed to a series of harassment incidents in VR and potential virtual space privacy protection issues, all large companies have to be vigilant, especially global technology companies, who have to balance product construction and user privacy and security.

According to the latest news, Alex Kipman, head of mixed reality at Microsoft, released an open letter saying that it will strengthen the privacy protection of its VR social platform AltspaceVR.

Alex Kipman said: "As platforms like AltspaceVR evolve, we have to re-examine the user experience and re-evaluate whether they meet the needs of current and future users, which helps build bridges for people with common interests and protects them from harassment or other misconduct because of virtual space."

The new initiatives are as follows:

1, close the open space officially provided by Microsoft AltspaceVR, including Campfire, News and Entertainment;

2, by default, open the "space bubble" function;

3. By default, the silent mode is turned on for users who have newly joined the virtual space.

4, the rating and review of virtual spaces/virtual activities will be strengthened in the future;

5, in the future, it will be mandatory to log in to AltspaceVR through Microsoft accounts, allowing parents to open parental control functions.

The first is easy to understand, because in VR, open space is more avoidable than avoidable harassment, closing Microsoft's official open virtual room means that the next AltspaceVR may be based on third-party virtual rooms created by users.

The second is a feature introduced in 2016, and its role is that when you are close to someone else's avatar, the system will "bubble" it and directly become transparent, rather than seeing the inside of the avatar. Previously optional, it is now enabled by default.
