Huang Tingjian was a famous writer and calligrapher of the Northern Song Dynasty, and this poem "Deng Kuai Ge" is his masterpiece of seven words. During the reign of Emperor Yuanfeng of the Song Dynasty, Huang Tingjian was in his 30s and was on the road to travel. He wrote this poem when he was serving as a zhi county in Taihe County, Jiangxi. Kuaige, founded in the Tang Dynasty, is located on the Ganjiang River. In the early years of the Northern Song Dynasty, a literati named Shen Zun went up to the attic and felt happy and relaxed, so he named this riverside attic "Kuaige".
After Huang Tingjian finished his official duties, he liked to climb the Kuaige Pavilion and relax his tense nerves. The "idiot" in the poem is Huang Tingjian's self-effacing statement, which can be directly translated as "I". Huang Tingjian did not continue to "sell miserably", he turned his pen sharply and imagined the future. He seemed to see the happy life after retreating, riding a flat boat, playing the flute, down the river, back to his hometown. Along the way, there are white gulls and fine wine as companions, such a happy and comfortable life is Huang Tingjian's dream.
When Huang Tingjian left Taihe in Jiangxi at the age of 40, he did not retire and continued to run in the official arena. Ideals are out of reach for many people. Even Huang Tingjian could not live as he pleased. The real situation and the emotion of "Dengkuaige" let people see Huang Tingjian's helplessness.
