X-ray, which is economical and fast, is the most commonly used test in orthopedics and can initially screen for ankle fractures. CT examination, the radiation dose will be more than X-ray, but the resolution of the ankle image is higher than that of X-ray, and it can also reconstruct the image from multiple levels and angles such as transverse fracture, sagittal, and coronal position, and there will be no overlap between the bones. If an X-ray reveals a suspicious fracture but does not confirm the diagnosis, another CT scan is usually done as a booster. MRI is a non-invasive, painless, radiation-free test with a high resolution on soft tissues that can clearly show blood vessels, muscles, ligaments, nerves, etc. X-rays and CT scans can confirm fractures, but the diagnosis of ligament, muscle, and nerve damage is not as good as MRI.

After a sprained ankle, the activity should be stopped immediately and ice packed with ice packs. Ice compresses can cause capillaries to constrict at the injured site, delay blood flow, reduce vascular permeability, reduce bleeding, and reduce local soft tissue swelling, pain and spasms. However, the ice compress time should not be too long, no more than 20 minutes at a time, to avoid frostbite. During the ice compress, do not rub with topical drugs that activate blood, which will aggravate the swelling and pain.
