Barrett M82 sniper rifle

The M82 is a special application scoped rifle (SASR) developed by barrett corporation in the United States, which is mainly available in two models, M82A1 and M82A2, and is used by many Western armies, including the US special forces.

The M82 is derived from a semi-automatic sniper rifle project established by Ronnie Barrett to use 12.7×99 mm NATO (.50 BMG, NATO short for NATO) caliber ammunition. This caliber of ammunition was originally used by the Browning M2HB heavy machine gun. Development of the M82 began in the early 1980s.

In 1990, U.S. forces attacked Iraqi forces during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Kuwait, purchasing for the first time 125 M82A1 sniper rifles to equip the Marine Corps.

Variants of M82 are mainly M82A1, M82A2, M82A3 and M107.

The M82 sniper rifle uses an aerodynamic working principle, the barrel will sit back for about 25 mm when firing, and is safely locked by the rotary bolt. After a brief recoil, the bolt is pushed into a curved rail and then twisted to unlock the barrel. After unlocking, the bolt pull arm instantly retracts, and the action of transferring the recoil of the barrel completes the cycle. The barrel is then fixed and the bolt bounces back, ejecting the shell. When the firing pin is returned, the bolt draws a bullet from the magazine and feeds it into the chamber, while the trigger bounces back to the rear of the firing pin. The chamber of the gun is divided into upper and lower parts, which are stamped from thin steel plates and fixed with cross bolts. The barrel has a recessed hole for heat dissipation and weight reduction, and is also fitted with a large and effective muzzle brake. In addition, the gun can be fitted with scopes and folding mechanical sights in case of emergency.

The M82 is the U.S. military's only "Special Purpose Sniper Rifle" (SASR) that can be used for anti-materiel attacks and detonation ammunition depots. It has an effective range of more than 1500 meters, and even has a hit record of 2500 meters, ultra-high kinetic energy with high-energy ammunition, which can effectively destroy strategic materials such as radar stations, trucks, fighters (parked states), so it is also called "anti-materiel rifle". Because the M82 can penetrate many walls, it was also used to attack people hiding behind bunkers, although this was not its main purpose.

The M82 sniper rifle has appeared in many films and television, such as Rambo IV (2007), Sniper: Reloaded (2010), And The Hurt Locker (2008). It is worth mentioning that most movies have exaggerated their performance, and some even say that it can take down passenger aircraft. In fact, the M82 can only hit parked aircraft, and only an extraordinary shooter can shoot down a high-speed aircraft (assuming it is within range) within 10-round magazine.
