Many people know that Zhang Yimou originally studied photography, but few people know that Chen Jianyu played a very big role in Zhang Yimou's "transformation". Zhang's idea of becoming a director was first to seek Chen Jianyu's opinion. After receiving Chen Jianyu's support, Zhang Yimou was very happy: "Can you recommend something to me?" At that time, Chen Jianyu was recuperating at home, read a lot of novels, and said: "'Red Sorghum' is very good, the difficulty is bigger, but it can be done." Zhang Yimou was sitting on the ground at the time, and when he heard this, he rolled around happily, "How did I not expect it?" I have also seen "Red Sorghum", and asked Chen Jianyu to help him adapt. Chen Jianyu agreed, and this was his first official act as a screenwriter.

Chen Jianyu likes the job of screenwriter very much. In 1990, he was transferred back to the Film Association, and he wrote at least one script a year, and has written eleven or twelve. Some of the influences are also quite large, such as "Cradle with a Rudder". In 1999, he also wrote a script for his hometown, that is, the TV series "Thorny Flower Red" that many Quanzhou people have seen.

Retired Chen Jianyu not only judges for many activities related to movies and filmmakers, but also specially planned some topics related to filmmakers for the "Art Life" column of CCTV. And there are still several film appointments in hand that cannot be carried out as scheduled due to the lack of time schedule.
