Canadian Immigration: B.C. releases its labor market outlook, forecasting 1 million job openings

Recently, the B.C. Government released its latest LabourMarket Outlook report, which forecasts the province's labor market supply and demand relationship from 2021 to 2031 and the province's future career trends in 61 industries, 500 jobs and 7 regions.

The report will help governments and businesses redeploy their workforce and provide B.C. residents with up-to-date information so they can decide their future path to employment. Nearly 80 per cent of these future job openings require some level of post-secondary education or training requirements.

The report predicts that there will be more than 1 million job openings over the next decade, creating opportunities for students and job seekers to develop their skills and find meaningful jobs in the future.

Among the seven regions in B.C., the highest number of job openings was in the Mainland/Southwest Economic Region, with 653,200.

It includes the Greater Vancouver region, the Fraser Valley, Squamish-Lillooet and the Sunshine Coast, with a total population of over 2.7 million.

The B.C. government predicts that the 1 million jobs are vacant,

48% will be filled by young people in the province,

34% will come from new immigrants from foreign countries,

Immigrants from other provinces will account for 8%.

The report shows that five major areas account for more than half of the vacancies in B.C. Among them: 14% in healthcare and social assistance, 14% in professional and technology services, 10% in retail and trade, 8% in construction, and 7% in accommodation and foodservice, of which more than 111,000 jobs will be vacant in technology (STEM) and 85,000 in technology (Skilledtrades).
