Nurses or Personal Support Workers (PSWs) look over! Ontario's new program can provide funding to help pay tuition and further develop in long-term care!
On October 27, the Ontario government announced that it would invest $100 million to bring 2,000 nurses to long-term care facilities over three to four years. The provincial government said it would do so by helping train thousands of nurses and personal care workers who want to develop further in the field.
This massive investment is part of the government's program to train, educate, and help recruit thousands of new health care workers so that long-term care homes and facilities can provide an average of four hours of direct care per resident per day.
The program provides education grants in the nursing sector, and the government provides financial support to eligible individual care workers and nurses each year, up to a maximum of $6,000 for individual care workers and up to $10,000 for nurses.
Candidates who require additional support may also apply for $5,000 to cover course materials, tutoring, childcare, or travel expenses.
All applicants to these programs should work in the long-term care sector during the same period of time that they receive these financial support.
Through the transformation of the nursing programs at Ontario universities and colleges, the government will increase the number of people enrolled in pathway programs for the 2022-2023 academic year by adding more opportunities, introducing face-to-face and online learning programs so that students can maintain their flexible schedules, and providing internationally trained nurses with a stipend of up to $6,000 CAD per year so they can earn the credentials they need to work in Ontario.
