The Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee summarized the two key words of "green Olympic Games": low-carbon management and ecological protection

At the press conference of the Beijing Winter Olympics on February 9, 2022, Li Sen, director of the Overall Planning Department of the Beijing Winter Olympics Organizing Committee, used two keywords of low-carbon management and ecological protection to summarize the results of the preparation and implementation of the "green Olympic Games" in the preparation of the Winter Olympics.

"When we bid, we promised that all the carbon emissions generated by the Beijing Winter Olympics would be neutralized. Over the past six years, we have minimized carbon emissions through low-carbon venues, low-carbon energy, low-carbon transportation, low-carbon offices and other measures, and at the same time adopted carbon offset methods such as forestry carbon sinks and corporate donations, thus ensuring the smooth realization of the carbon neutrality goal of the Beijing Winter Olympics. Li Sen said.

For example, he said, the Beijing Winter Olympics utilized a total of six Beijing 2008 Olympic competition and non-competition venues. Among them, the National Aquatics Center "Water Cube" transformed into "Ice Cube" into a curling and wheelchair curling competition venue, and creatively realized the "water ice conversion" through the use of a convertible steel frame support system and a detachable ice making system, becoming a typical example of the Transformation of Summer Olympic Heritage into a Winter Olympic venue. This conversion model greatly reduces the cost of demolition and renovation in the later stage, and also reduces the carbon emissions generated by new venues. In addition, 100% of the conventional electricity consumption of all venues of the Winter Olympics also uses green electricity.

For ecological protection, Li Sen said that we adhere to ecological priority, resource conservation, environmental friendliness, ecological protection and venue construction overall planning, integrated promotion, guard the green water and green mountains in the competition area; we are based on the coordinated development of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, comprehensive development of sand control, gas control, water control projects, and promote the improvement of the regional ecological environment.

For example, he said that in the Yanqing Competition Area, an environmental impact assessment of the planned area was carried out before the construction of the venue, and three protection measures were implemented for the growth conditions of the main protected plants. Protect in situ plants that are less disturbed by construction, and protect plants that cannot be avoided during construction. Although these plants have "moved", they still grow well after careful maintenance by the garden units.

In addition, they also carried out effective ecological restoration of the Yanqing race area by means of topsoil stripping. Mountain topsoils are a valuable natural resource with rich seed banks. The Yanqing Division carried out a year of topsoil stripping and collection work before the construction of the venue, and most of the stripping work was done manually in order not to destroy the topsoil. A total of 81,000 cubic meters of topsoil have been stripped from the Yanqing Competition Area, which has been used for ecological restoration and landscape reconstruction in the Competition Area.

"We also restored 3,500 square meters of subalpine meadows in the National Alpine Ski Centre area by means of turf stripping and resurfacing. In the spring, you'll see this vibrant meadow and the wind-blowing rouge flowers that form a harmonious picture with the Winter Olympic venues. Li Sen said.
