Doctors are now a high-risk profession.
Late last month, a doctor in the city of Crétail, Val-de-Marne, southeast of Paris, was violently beaten to the point of fracture and stitches for failing to meet the patient's demands.
It happened around four p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28, when Yvex Puech, a 70-year-old occupational physician, received a patient at the town hall on rue Félix-Maire.
This street brings together the offices of municipal government staff, medical social centers and training centers, etc.
The patient is the staff in charge of urban greening in the city hall.
Before coming to see Dr. Puch, the patient had already seen another doctor on Wednesday.
Because the patient had tendonitis and had suffered another accident at work, the previous doctor issued him a six-month work restriction certificate to ease his workload and help him recover from inflammation.
This time, when dr. Puch came to see him, the patient hoped that for some of the machines he needed to use in his work, such as lawn mowers, bush trimming machines, etc., the doctor could issue him another job restriction certificate.
Dr. Puch did not directly refuse his request. Instead, he asked the patient to see the doctor he had seen before, who was also a colleague of Dr. Puch.
Because Dr. Puch felt that colleagues should know more about the patient's situation and be more qualified to judge whether to issue the corresponding certificate to the patient.
Unexpectedly, this move directly angered the patient.
The conversation in the clinic gradually became louder, and according to the doctor's recollection, the patient began to yell at him.
"He said he knew me and I knew him, and he felt like I should do whatever he asked."
The doctor recalled that he might have seen the patient once or twice before, but that was no reason for him to grant any of the patient's requests.
The patient angrily came to the corridor after firing at the doctor and continued to shout. The doctor then came out and advised him to calm down first.

After being beaten, the doctor himself was confused and stayed in the corridor for a long time.
Immediately, other staff members came out to stop the patient who wanted to escape, and at the same time called the police.

"He used me as a punching bag. This is one of the hallmarks of this era – to the police, to the teachers... There are also doctors, who no longer have any respect at all. ”
The suspect has now been detained by the police and placed under judicial supervision, and has been absolutely barred from approaching Dr. Puch.
Even more egregious, however, the doctor's lawyer told him that the patient told the police that it was the doctor who moved first.
Dr. Puch said that he had an old injury on his right elbow, a motorcycle accident occurred 30 years ago, he had four nails in his arm, and he was right-handed, in order not to let the recurrence of the old injury affect his work life, he was very careful with his right hand.
The accusation that he hit someone first is ridiculous!
The doctor said he would check with his lawyer and file a complaint against the other party for "defamatory charges."
The suspect will be tried on May 23 on charges of "violence against the head of public service."
Now that more than ten days have passed, Dr. Puch has not returned to work. Having been a doctor for more than forty years, "I have never been a victim of this kind of violence".
Dr. Puch said he had also performed many night surgeries, even though not many doctors were willing to take on the job at the time. But now, he needs time to recover physically and calmly, and he doesn't know when he will want to go back to work.
The suspect's employer, the city of Crétel, has not until now made any notification of the employee's actions.
Doctor-patient disputes are now becoming a global problem. In France, such incidents are also increasing.
Previously, there was a precedent in Paris where the patient's family was dissatisfied with the diagnosis results and beat up the doctor. Dunkirk has also had news reports in which patients feel that the doctor's questioning is "stupid" and punch at each other.
According to the investigation, half of the perpetrators in these cases were the patients themselves, and a considerable number of them came from friends or family members.
And their reasons for violence are simple: they feel that the medical process is complicated, they don't like the rules, or they simply don't like a doctor.
From the doctor's point of view, the most helpless thing is that some disputes are simply not enough to attract the attention of the police, and they can only bear the consequences afterwards, and there is no better solution.

Of course, the core of the doctor-patient relationship is the issue of the medical security system. In France, which has implemented a universal health insurance system, there are still many doctor-patient disputes, indicating that the system still needs to be improved.
