Demystifying the | Winter Olympic weather forecast with atmospheric "CT"

At the Beijing Winter Olympics, there is a group of people who can see through the wind and snow - Professor Lu Xin of the School of Integrated Circuits and Electronics of Beijing Institute of Technology, Hu Weidong's team cooperated with the National Satellite Meteorological Center to achieve "CT" to the atmosphere, providing weather forecast information such as temperature, humidity, wind field and snowfall for the competition.

The Team of Beijing Polytechnic University and the Team of National Satellite Meteorological Center jointly tackled the problem

To make predictions about the weather during the Winter Olympics, massive remote sensing data is the basis. Hu Weidong introduced that the team conducted all-weather and all-day atmospheric observations through the Fengyun-3 meteorological satellite to obtain remote sensing data such as atmospheric parameters, surface parameters, and marine dynamic environment, which is equivalent to making a "CT" to the atmosphere.

However, the data collected directly by satellites is blurry, and the resolution needs to be increased by 4 to 8 times to truly provide accurate information for the weather forecast of the Winter Olympics. "At this time, the microwave terahertz remote sensing technology we developed came in handy." Hu Weidong confidently introduced that compared with traditional optical remote sensing, microwave terahertz remote sensing has strong penetration, can detect the environment under cloud cover, and its unique spectral characteristics can also obtain information such as temperature, humidity, sea ice, sea breeze, water vapor, snow depth, snow water equivalent and pollution index in a targeted manner.

With the blessing of microwave terahertz remote sensing technology, the team enhanced the resolution of the remote sensing data, washed away the "mosaic" on the original image, and the clear satellite image could "see the Winter Olympic Games" at a glance.

However, the image data itself can not directly derive weather information, the team also through the calculation, the snow depth, wind field, rainfall, etc. in reverse deduction, and finally derived the snow depth of each ski track, the wind in a certain area of the field, whether there is snowfall and other information, the weather and environment of the Winter Olympic Stadium for accurate forecasting and monitoring.

"For winter outdoor sports, the weather is both a 'safety officer' and a 'roadblock'." Hu Weidong said that the team used real-time and accurate observation of meteorological satellites and microwave terahertz remote sensing technology to forecast the weather during the Winter Olympics, "We have the responsibility to escort the safety of athletes and use the power of science and technology to ensure the smooth and safe holding of winter Olympic events!" ”
