The freestyle skiing U-shaped track skill event was officially contested at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014. It is a sport that is both aesthetically pleasing and dangerous, and is often considered more dangerous than other sports, so athletes are required to wear protective gear during competitions or usual training. The competition is played in a groove shaped like a U-shape, known in English as Halfpipe, and the structure consists of a wide, flat bottom and concave slopes (or quarters of a round tube) on either side. The wide bottom is meant to rebalance the athlete and prepare for the next move. In a round of competition, athletes generally need to do 5 to 6 movements in the U-shaped pool, and the score is judged according to the height of the action and the angle of rotation, as well as the fluency and aesthetics of the action.

Competition venue

The U-shaped venue of the Beijing Winter Olympics is located in Yunding Ski Park in Zhangjiakou. Genting Ski Park includes six tracks, namely U-shaped track skills, slope obstacle course skills, snow skills, aerial skills, obstacle chases, and parallel giant slaloms, resulting in a total of 20 gold medals.

However on the track of almost 220 meters in length

Contestants don't just "fly up and down"

And make movements in the air

Clearly record the "wonderful moments" of the players

Scoring matches is critical

Let's take a look at it!

"Snow Field Hawkeye" from Beijing Polytechnic

At the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the alpine skiing automatic tracking shooting system led by Professor Dong Liquan, Associate Professor Liu Ming and Teacher Chu Xuhong of the School of Optoelectronics of Beijing Institute of Technology not only provided scientific and technological services for the broadcast of alpine skiing competitions and the daily training of national team ski jumping, but also participated in the video shooting task of U-shaped skiing skill project action judging. The "Snow Field Eagle Eye" system from Beijing Polytechnic will close-up track the gliding process of the athletes of the U-shaped groove competition and transmit it in real time to the referee room 100 meters away for 6 international referees to watch and score.

Set up automatic tracking shooting equipment

Milliseconds! North Polytechnic "Snow Field Hawkeye"

The alpine skiing automatic tracking and shooting system developed by Beijing Polytechnic can serve a number of alpine skiing projects, the system has accurate intelligent identification and automatic tracking functions, just set up a set every 150 meters in the field, for "relay" shooting, you can get the whole process of alpine skiers sliding down from the top of the mountain at high speed.

"Alpine skiing has a lot of ski slopes, turns, and sometimes close to right angles, while athletes can reach speeds of up to 130 to 140 km/h, so it's not easy to capture the moment with the camera. This places high demands on the real-time nature of the system, and our equipment, identification and tracking are calculated in milliseconds. Team leader Dong Liquan said.

The team installed and commissioned equipment at the National Alpine Ski Center

Compared with the racing alpine skiing, U-shaped field skills in addition to skiing, but also accompanied by jumping, rotation and other actions, the requirements for action detail shooting are higher, and the equipment is required to be set up in the end area, from 200 meters to 10 meters, 20 times the zoom requires the picture to be clear at all times; different from the alpine skier's sports curve is top-down, the U-shaped field skiing curve is not only up and down, and the athletes slide along the U groove wall left and right and jump, rotate, and the top of the head is also accompanied by synchronous shooting equipment such as "flying cats". This makes it more difficult for the device to automatically track and shoot. Through the refined algorithm, the teachers and students of Beijing Polytechnic University realized the automatic identification of athletes by the system, and quickly locked and tracked them.

Automated "Snow Hawkeye" with on-site manual camera positions

Broadcast-grade 4K image quality + 45x zoom lens

In order to ensure clear image quality, Beijing Polytechnic's "Snow Field Eagle Eye" is equipped with a broadcast-grade 4K camera and a 45x zoom lens, and has auto zoom focus, remote zoom focus and auto-aperture dimming functions, which can automatically adjust the lens magnification according to the target distance, and under the control of the preset software, it can smoothly and stably achieve accurate tracking and shooting of the athlete's movement process.

In addition, the system also has automatic and manual working modes, which can be controlled at a long distance, so as to avoid the cameraman's long-term exposure to severe cold conditions, effectively reduce the intensity of work, and if necessary, use manual operation instead of automatic tracking function to achieve real-time human-computer interaction.

Constant temperature "Eagle Eye" that withstands extreme cold

The temperature of the ski resort is as low as minus 30 to 40 degrees, and ordinary camera equipment often "strikes" in such extreme weather. In order to cope with the challenge of low temperatures, the Team of Beijing Polytechnic designed a sealing ring and temperature-controlled heating device for the alpine ski tracking shooting system, which is equivalent to equipping the camera equipment with an incubator to assist key components such as cameras to work stably between -40°C and 60°C.

After practical testing, the "Snow Field Eagle Eye" of Beijing Polytechnic Institute can still work normally and stably in the weather environment of -20 degrees Celsius and six or seven levels of wind and snow, and after up to 12 hours of power off and outdoor low temperature storage, it can still start normally, and the components are running well. This self-developed shooting system can fully meet the actual needs of sports shooting in a cold environment.

Contribute to the Winter Olympics, the mission is on the shoulders

In August 2018, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee and the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission carefully sorted out the problems in the previous Winter Olympic Games, and after many inspections and competitions, finally decided to hand over the scientific research task of alpine ski shooting to the team of Dong Liquan of the Beijing Institute of Science and Technology Optoelectronics, hoping that the team would realize fully automatic tracking and shooting of alpine skiing before the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.

Since the 1950s, the School of Optoelectronics of Beijing Polytechnic Institute has been a leader in the field of optoelectronic research in China, and has made fruitful scientific research achievements in the fields of photoelectric imaging, photoelectric detection and intelligent perception in recent years. In the face of the needs of major national tasks, the workers of Beili are duty-bound and the mission is on their shoulders.

Chinese New Year's Eve, teachers and students of Beijing Polytechnic University were stationed in the snow and wind of the Winter Olympic Games

Since November 2018, Dong Liquan has led the team members to devote themselves to the project research, overcoming the difficulties in the experimental site, test subjects and winter sports seasonality, and seizing the time to carry out research work. In the summer and autumn, teachers and students even rode bicycles to simulate athletes accelerating, decelerating, turning, and testing the follow-up effect of the automatic tracking shooting system.

During the winter 2021 field test, due to the requirements of epidemic prevention and control, the team members were closed in the designated station, implemented closed-loop management, and installed all the equipment before the athletes arrived at the stadium every day at dawn. Alpine skiing automatic tracking shooting system, lenses, cameras and tooling and other auxiliary equipment is nearly 100 kilograms, and teachers and students have to take turns carrying them up the mountain.

At that stage, every morning at 7 o'clock, the cable car that had just started and the canteen that had just opened for meals witnessed the hard work of the teachers and students of the Beijing Polytechnic Institute. After a busy day, self-heating food, instant noodles, and water have become the standard for teachers and students to go up the mountain every day.

Just after New Year's Day in 2022, three team members went to The Genting Ski Park in Zhangjiakou Racing Area to carry out pre-race equipment installation, joint commissioning, testing and other work in the closed-loop management area, and discussed relevant details with the representatives of the International Snow Federation (FIS) competition and international referees. The image picture output of the "Snow Field Hawkeye" of Beijing Polytechnic Institute has been unanimously affirmed and highly praised by FIS and the referees.
