"Spending time with wolves" 04 ▏ Uncle Albert fell in love (Part 2)

I don't know how long Albert has been single, but apparently for too long. When he reached the place where Kua was chained, he ran too fast and even ran overboard. In that tense moment, I even thought that he had judged us to be his love enemies, so he had to continue his advance, straight to the tent, and rushed in to deal with us; fortunately, he turned his head in time to slow down the pace of the rush. Kua was ecstatically awaiting his arrival, but when he was less than 10 feet away from Kua, his attitude suddenly changed. Only to see him stop, stand still, lower his big head, and play the role of amusing clown.

It was an embarrassing scene. His ears were hunched down until they were flush with the broad skull, and then he began to writhe like a puppy while furrowing his lips and making a terrible grimace—probably to show fascination, but to me, more like a sign of aging. He also began to wail in a flattering false voice, which sounded disgusting as if it came from a pug.

Kua seemed to be overwhelmed by the other's unexpected and unusual behavior. Apparently, no one had ever asked her for love in such a surprising way before, so she seemed unsure what to do. With an unusual howl, she stepped back as far as the chains allowed, away from Albert.

This made Albert feel extremely inferior. He landed on his stomach, lay on the ground, and began to crawl closer to her, at the same time, his grimace grew larger, looking like a complete idiot.

Now I'm starting to worry as much as Kua, thinking the wolf has completely lost his mind. I was about to pick up my rifle and go to save Kua when Otek stopped me. He grinned and laughed happily—an explicit lascivious laugh. He made it clear to me not to worry, that from the wolf's point of view, things were going well.

At this moment, Albert shifted gears at a dizzying pace and changed his attitude. He stood up and suddenly transformed into a majestic male. The hairs of his neck slowly unfolded until a huge silver garland formed, which set off his face. His body tensed up until it looked like it was made of white steel. His tail cocked high and curled tightly, almost like a real husky. Then, step by step, he took brisk steps, shortening the distance with the husky.

Kua no longer doubted—a move she could understand. She turned shyly with her back to him; when he stretched out his big nose to caress her for the first time, she turned around and shyly bit his shoulder...

My account of the rest of this episode is comprehensive and detailed, but I fear they are too specialized, all in scientific terms, and not worth a place in this book. So I think it's enough to make observations here – Albert does know how to have sex.

My curiosity about science was satisfied, but Uncle Albert's enthusiasm had not cooled down, and now the most difficult situation had emerged. Although we waited patiently for two hours as much as we could, Albert did not show the slightest intention of leaving his new love...

Albert stood his ground... It wasn't until I, with great reluctance, fired a shot near where Albert was standing that the stalemate was broken.

The sound of gunfire woke Albert out of his trance. He jumped up high and jumped out a dozen yards at once, but soon regained his composure, and then began to slowly retreat in front of us...

Albert has been with us. He was always 15 to 20 yards away from us, sometimes at the back, sometimes on the side, sometimes in the front; he was reluctant to leave us.

Back at the cabin, I fired another line of bullets into the air, trying to cool his enthusiasm, but to no avail, only to get him back a few yards. Apparently, there was no other way but to take Cua into the cabin for the night; for locking her and her teammates in a dog chain could lead to a scuffle between them and Albert.

It was a creepy night. As soon as we closed the door, Albert began to wail... Kua joined in, screaming the message "Eternal Love." It was an unbearable night. In the morning, Mike threatened to shoot again, and it was true.

It was Otec who saved the day... He convinces Mike that as soon as he lets go of Kua, everything will be fine...

As usual, he was absolutely right. Over the next week, we sometimes caught glimpses of the couple walking shoulder to shoulder over distant ridges. They never approached the serpentine mound where the wolf's den was located, nor did they approach our hut. They live in a world that is entirely their own, indifferent to everything except each other.

They didn't pay attention to us, but I watched them nervously. One morning I was happy to see Kua lying in his old place by the dog chain, looking exhausted but satisfied.

The next night, Uncle Albert reappeared on the serpentine mound with wolves and took part in the evening chorus ceremony. However, he now had a roundness and sweetness in his voice that I had never heard before, and there was no lack of self-satisfaction in it, which made me feel very uncomfortable. Showing off is an act I can never tolerate—even when it happens to wolves.
