U.S. Senator: Concerns about Tesla's autopilot system

IT House reported on February 8 that US Democratic Senators Blumenthal and Markey expressed concern about Tesla's autopilot system, saying that they were "deeply troubled" by Tesla's design choices and saying that Tesla's system should comply with the law.

Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, issued a statement after reviewing numerous reports of dangerous braking defects in Tesla's autopilot and fully autonomous driving systems.

U.S. Senator: Concerns about Tesla's autopilot system

"The latest developments in Tesla's self-driving and fully autonomous driving systems are precisely why we have long expressed deep concerns about this flawed technology," the senators said. "While autonomous driving and driver assistance systems have the potential to improve safety, their implementation must have strong safeguards in place to ensure that our cars comply with the rules of the road and that drivers are fully involved in driving." We commend NHTSA for its ongoing investigative work and urge it to continue to take all appropriate action to protect all road users. ”

In fact, Senators Markey and Blumenthal have been concerned for years about the safety posed by self-driving car (AV) technology.

In May 2018, senators asked major automakers and tech companies that develop self-driving cars on public roads about testing safety protocols for driving vehicles.

In a series of Tesla crashes in August 2021, Senators Markey and Blumenthal expressed serious concern about Tesla's misleading advertising and marketing of its Autopilot and Full Autopilot (FSD) features, and called on the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to investigate and take enforcement action.
