"This scientific inquiry documentary was made to participate in the 12th National Youth Video Festival." Chen Yaoyao, the project instructor, said that just last year, there was a scientific image project of the Zhejiang Provincial Primary and Secondary School Information Technology Creation Competition, and she decided to form a team to participate in the provincial competition during the summer vacation.
Considering that students need to have the ability of planning, experimenting, shooting, etc., after screening, Chen Yaoyao finally selected Quan Jinran, Xiang Zhen, and Xia Hui to team up and be responsible for experimentation, shooting, scripting and editing.
Although the three of them are members of the school television station and have the experience and ability to shoot, they are still exposed to science documentaries for the first time. In order to set an interesting and popular theme, the group members watched a lot of documentaries to find inspiration. At first, I considered topics such as "The Mystery of Hair Toughness" and "Nature's Tailor", but they were abandoned because it was difficult to experiment and shoot.
"When discussing the direction of the topic, we thought that we had a physics problem in the middle school exam, which was about how the paper airplane flew farther. Paper airplanes are childhood memories and are more interesting. And we can look at the problem from the perspective of the questioner, and we can also use high school knowledge to solve junior high school problems. Xiang Zhen said with a smile that the three of them hit it off and decided to carry out a series of experiments on the theme of paper airplanes. In order to enrich the details of the experiment, they also added experimental variables, and finally determined the throwing angle, aircraft weight and the size of the throwing force.

Good at finding alternatives in experiments
After the school started in September last year, Quan Jinran and the other three people began to spend some time doing experiments and shooting videos in addition to studying. Every day during the lunch break, they would meet to discuss today's experimental tasks and shooting work, and then complete them separately. Generally one or two effective experiments can be completed at noon.
During the experiment, except for the scientific instruments provided by the school, the rest of the experimental devices were made by them or looked for alternatives. For example, the traditional paper airplane is made of paper folding, but Quan Jinran found in the experiment that the paper airplane is easy to deform after the landing collision, resulting in experimental deviations, and it is difficult to ensure that the exact same paper airplane can be folded.
To solve the problem, they decided to use the model aircraft as a prototype, split it into parts, and recorded the relevant data. Paper parts for making the model aircraft are then purchased online and assembled together to reduce the error of the aircraft itself. "Just doing the plane, it took us almost a week." Quan Jinran quipped that they made a total of 5 planes, 4 of which crashed in the experiment, and fortunately 1 was left on camera.
In terms of finding alternatives, the three of them can be described as "veterans". In experiments to change the weight of an airplane, the first reaction of the team members was to use the weights of the laboratory. But even the minimum weight (20g) cannot be carried by the aircraft. Then they brainstormed around the weights, thinking that the coins were actually small weights, and that simply increasing the number of coins on the plane would achieve the desired effect.
"There are many more examples like this, such as in the experiment of changing the angle of aircraft throwing, we wanted to design a launcher, and later in class, I found that the giant protractor used by the math teacher was the device we needed." Xiang Zhen said that more experiments can be more sensitive to the problem in life and find a solution.

Experiments with paper airplanes are constantly being optimized, and documentary filming is also being carried out simultaneously. But shooting was not all smooth sailing, either the experiment failed, or the picture was not good, and often needed to be reworked. What impressed the project team the most was the footage of the paper plane taking off. "The finished film was only a few seconds, but the shooting took us several hours. It was cloudy, windy, and it rained from time to time. But in order to rush the deadline, I had to shoot it. Xia Hui said that they could only be the same as "fighting guerrilla warfare", when the rain stopped, they came out to shoot, and when the rain was heavy, they hid in it, crashed two planes, and took dozens of pieces of material to get a satisfactory material.
Editing is also a big project, and Xia Hui needs to find useful and satisfactory materials in a library of more than 50 gigabytes. Thinking that the latest time to turn in was October 1, the three members of the group had to rush to work the day before the holiday. Organize material, write narration, dubbing... From 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. the next day, the finished product was finally "born".
Fortunately, the result was not bad, and he won the second prize in the provincial competition. Xia Hui admitted that they hope to achieve results in the national competition, but they do not insist on it. The biggest gain is to learn theoretical knowledge and improve logical thinking ability in the process of completing the documentary.
"In fact, students are like paper airplanes, learning technology can help them fly farther." Chen Yaoyao told reporters that in order to help students divergent thinking, the school often organizes various scientific and technological activities and clubs for students to participate in, and also builds scientific and technological learning centers such as Qihang Maker Workshop, Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, and Bio-Digital Microscopy Laboratory to provide students with a platform for learning and activities.
