According to the New York Post, the Office of the Sheriff of Jefferson, Louisiana, said two local adults smoked marijuana in a car, causing a shooting incident in "negligent" circumstances, hitting and killing a 4-year-old boy who was sitting in the car at the same time.

At around 10:45 p.m. local time on January 29, local police responded to the shooting that occurred 12 miles from downtown New Orleans. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office said, "When the two adults were smoking marijuana in the front seat, a shooting occurred inside the car, hitting the victim, causing fatal injuries." ”
The 4-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital for treatment but died of his injuries. Police do not believe it was a wound inflicted on the boy himself and are still trying to find out who fired the gun. Jefferson's Parish Sheriff's Office explained, "Based on the preliminary investigation, our investigators believe that the child was not injured by malicious acts, but by negligence. ”
In the aftermath of the shooting, the sheriff's office stressed the need to responsibly possess firearms, saying "firearms should not be left unattended in a car or within the reach of children." (Edit: HHJ)
