Chen Chun: Paradigm changes and the development of archaeological cultural concepts

The main role of the concept of archaeological culture is to use typological methods to arrange the time and space of excavated materials, and to sort out the chaotic material culture in an orderly manner. However, its isolation and static approach to the treatment of archaeological materials hampers archaeologists' efforts to reconstruct history from the perspective of dynamics and human behavior. Chen Chun, a professor at the Department of Cultural Relics and Museology of Fudan University, pointed out in the article "Paradigm Change and the Development of Archaeological and Cultural Concepts" that at present, the advance of mainland scientific and technological archaeology and the lag of archaeological and cultural research make it difficult for scientific and technological means to fit with cultural analysis, and it is difficult to cope with many key issues in historical reconstruction. Therefore, the study of archaeological culture needs to be updated from the theoretical method, giving archaeological culture a new connotation of function, system and process, in order to deeply understand the role of material culture in ancient society, and then explore the changes of ancient economy, politics and society, and make theoretical interpretations of the driving forces of social development.
