Toshiba hard drives set a new shipment record in 2021Q4, climbing to 2.89 million units

Toshiba announced today that in the fourth quarter of 2021, its nearline hard drive shipments reached 2.89 million units, setting a new record with an 80% year-on-year increase. That's 4 percent higher than the best record set earlier this year. Exabytes grew consecutively to 33.81 in the quarter, an increase of more than 94% compared to a year ago.

IDC Research Director Ed Burns believes that Toshiba's efforts in the storage market are reflected in the equipment shipments in the fourth quarter of 2021, and the application of MAMR microwave-assisted magnetic recording technology (FC-MAMR) and microwave-assisted switching-microwave-assisted magnetic recording technology (MAS-MAMR) will further enhance the competitiveness of Toshiba hard disks in the market.

The relevant person in charge of Toshiba said that 2021 is amazing, because Toshiba's storage division has set a number of new records, thanks to the dedication of all employees of Toshiba Hard Disk and the partnership of several strategic customers, all this has been achieved, and I hope that 2022 can continue to maintain such a positive momentum and focus on new milestones.

Toshiba currently offers a comprehensive line of hard drives to meet the storage needs of the enterprise, data center, surveillance, and client markets. Its hard drives are targeted at four market segments, with the AL series focused on enterprise-class performance areas; the MG series targeting enterprise-class capacity and data center needs; the MQ series covering mobile clients and a wide range of usage scenarios; and the DT series targeting surveillance and traditional desktop client applications.

Previously, Toshiba demonstrated THE MAS-MAMR technology for the first time, demonstrating how to use the new technology to improve HDD storage capacity and performance. Through the collaboration between Showa Denko (Dielectric), TDK (a read-write head equipped with a dual spin jet layer), and Toshiba (a drive), the foundation was laid for the construction of a high-capacity mechanical hard disk drive (HDD) of more than 30TB. Toshiba's new goal is to commercialize hard drives with a capacity of 30TB and above as soon as possible.
