Nearly half of the elderly will not use smart TVs, smart TVs are suitable for aging, and there is a long way to go

In the Internet age, young people prefer to stick to mobile phones, while the elderly are still accustomed to watching TV for entertainment. However, the current smart TV has made many elderly people fall into the embarrassment of "wanting to watch but not watching".

Recently, the State Grid of China released the "2022 China Ageing TV Research Report". The data shows that many elderly people encounter difficulties when using smart TVs. Among them, "can not go directly to the TV programs you want to watch after booting" accounted for the largest proportion, reaching 49.6%, that is, nearly half of the concept. Others such as "many devices (set-top boxes, televisions) do not know how to switch between each other", "complex operation, do not know how to find the content you want to see", "too many remote controls, do not know how to use", "encounter problems can not find someone to help" accounted for 28.0%, 20.9%, 17.6%, 13.4%, are also pain points in the pain points.

Smart TV features more and more, the experience is more and more novel, for young people is a good thing, but for the silver-haired people has become a burden and helpless. Because of their age and limited ability to learn and embrace new things, many older adults are either stuck here or there at the operational level. Gone are the comforts of the previous one or two keys to the end. Many elderly people complain that watching TV now is like an "intelligence test", not a general "brain burning". There are also many elderly people who are unwilling to disturb their children and directly choose not to look at it.

The "2022 China Aging TV Research Report" shows that for smart TVs, the most anticipated functions for middle-aged and elderly people are voice control and mobile phone remote control, camera, and 1v1 customer service guidance. Among them, the proportion of choices that hope to control TVs through voice is as high as 47.9%. There is an old saying called "science and technology people-oriented", manufacturers in the development and production of smart TVs, it is indeed necessary to take care of the actual feelings of the elderly. After all, at present, middle-aged and elderly people are the largest audience of television, and the market space is huge. What's more, many young people are also quite critical of smart TVs. So that on the day of the release of the research report, this news was on the Weibo hot search that young people generally pay attention to.

Suitable for aging, is a hot word. In fact, not only smart TVs, but all smart products that are closely related to the lives of middle-aged and elderly people need to be adapted to aging. Smart microwave oven, smart rice cooker, smart refrigerator... There are also mobile phone smart APPS that the elderly have complained about before. It can be said that smart products are suitable for aging transformation, which is a huge and complicated project.

Nowadays, the aging of society is intensifying, and the state is paying more and more attention to it. In March 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the Notice on Effectively Solving the Difficulties of the Elderly in Using Intelligent Technology to Facilitate the Elderly to Use Intelligent Products and Services; in November, the Opinions of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council on Strengthening the Work on Aging in the New Era were released. Both national documents clearly propose the ageing transformation of smart products, which is enough to explain the problem.

From a technical point of view, it may not be difficult to make a smart TV simple and easy to operate. The key lies in the intention, in whether you can develop and produce products with respect for users. It is necessary to be intelligent and digital, but also to take into account the receptivity and practical needs of the elderly, simplify the operation process of watching TV, and cooperate with intimate customer service guidance, so that watching TV can truly become the enjoyment of the elderly.

The "2022 China Ageing TV Research Report" also summarizes the six dimensions of choosing and purchasing ageing smart TVs, namely TV interaction aging, problem feedback aging, smart function aging, system interface aging, purchase price aging, and aging experience. It is not difficult to see that these six purchasing dimensions are put forward from the perspective of the elderly's consumption pain points and consumer demands for smart TVs. To meet these six purchasing dimensions and win the favor of silver-haired people, smart TV manufacturers really have to make a good effort.

It is foreseeable that in the future, smart technology will become more and more advanced, which can meet the needs of all ages. Smart TVs are just one of many smart products. But right now, smart TVs that want to perform better and more contagiously in front of older people seem to have some way to go.
