Mortals desire to be good, and sexual evil to be evil. The husband wishes for thickness, the evil wishes for beauty, the narrow wishes for the wide, the poor wish for the rich, the lowly wish for the noble, and the one who has nothing to do with it, must seek from the outside. Therefore, those who are rich but do not want to be rich, those who are rich but do not want to be poor, and those who have the middle will not be able to reach the outside. From this point of view, man's desires are good, and their sexual evil is also evil. The nature of today's human beings is inherently impolite, so it is strong to learn and seek to have; sex does not know etiquette, so it is also thoughtful and seeking knowledge. However, if it is only sex, then people are rude and do not know etiquette. If people are rude and righteous, they are chaotic, and if they do not know etiquette, they are contradictory. However, if it is only sex, it is a rebellion in oneself. From this point of view, the nature of man is evil, and his good is also false. (Xunzi Sexual Evil Chapter 23, 09)

Man does good because human nature is evil. If the human heart is inherently good, is it necessary to be good?

Why? Xunzi's explanation is: The meager hope becomes richer, the ugly hope becomes beautiful, the narrow hope becomes wider, the poor hope becomes richer, and the lowly hope becomes noble. If you don't have it yourself, you will definitely ask for it. Therefore, the rich will not envy money, the noble will not envy the powerful, and if they have it themselves, they will not ask for it. From this point of view, the reason why people do good is because of sexual evil.

Human nature has no etiquette, so it will work hard to learn and master; human nature does not understand etiquette, so it will think to understand. In this way, if there is only nature, man will not have courtesy and righteousness, and he will not understand righteousness. Without propriety, there will be chaos and disorder, and without etiquette there will be disobedience. It can be seen that if there is only sex and no hypocrisy, rebellion will happen to oneself. From this point of view, it is obvious that human nature is evil, and good behavior is man-made.

Guo Moruo believed that Xunzi was intent on Mencius to become a family. It can be said that it is not paranoid or philosophical. Mencius and Xunzi, although they each insisted on their own words, actually believed that everyone had a heart for goodness and needed to learn and guide in order to achieve success.
