The past of Yuyuan Road, one of Shanghai's never-widening roads, is the life of several famous humanities and heroes, such as Qian Xuesen, Shi Jingcun, Du Chongyuan, Zhu Xijuan, Wang Jingwei, Fu Lei and others. And now, there are the most mottled plane tree shadows, the most garden houses, the most modern pop-up shops and the deepest coffee aroma, a few more steps, and the drunken taverns in the depths of the alley.

If you want to trace the origin of Yuyuan Road, you can start from the history of Shanghai's port opening and concession in 1843.
In 1845, Shanghai Daotai Palace Mujiu and the British consul Bafur signed the "Shanghai Land Charter", delineating the land north of Pidgin and south of Lijiazhuang, allowing it to be rented to British merchants for the construction of houses and residences, because there was no boundary site west of Lijiazhuang, on September 24 of the following year, Shanghai Daotai signed a supplementary agreement with the British consul to determine today's Henan Middle Road as the western boundary of the British Concession, and then formed the British Concession of four to the british concession, covering a total area of 830 acres.
In 1848, after the Qingpu Teaching Case, the British Concession expanded the western boundary to today's Middle Tibet Road, and the northern boundary extended to the south bank of the Suzhou River, and the area of the concession was expanded to 2800 mu.
In 1854, in order to earn the price difference in real estate, the British Shanghai Racecourse sold the racecourse in the concession that had been used for less than five years, and then bought land to the west outside the concession to build another one, and at the same time, in order to walk the horses, a road from the racecourse to The Jing'an Temple was built, which was also the first road built by the concession authorities to cross the border.
Then when the racecourse was built, just as Li Xiucheng led the Taiping Army to the east and approached Shanghai, the horse racing business was dismal, and the British merchants handed over the road that had been built to the management of the Ministry of Works Bureau, which named the road Bubbling Well Road according to a spring at the end of the road, which is the Jing'an Temple Road connected to Yuyuan Road today.
As the war became increasingly tense, Britain, the United States, France and other countries formed a coalition army to assist in the defense of Shanghai, on the grounds that farmland west of the concession was not conducive to military operations, the coalition army proposed to build some roads in the west to "Eli Military March", after the approval of the Qing court, in 1860, Shanghai Daotai built a very short military road north of Jing'an Temple, that is, the east section of today's Yuyuan Road.
In 1862, the Anglo-American concession was merged into a public concession, and after the war subsided, there was a constant quarrel on Yuyuan Road.
At that time, the Qing court believed that the construction of roads across the border was an extraordinary period approved by the Chinese government and funded by the concession, and agreed to reimburse all the costs of road construction and compensate for appropriate economic losses, and demanded the recovery of the right of way. However, the concession authorities resolutely opposed the return of the cross-border construction road to the Chinese government, and arbitrarily compiled door numbers on the cross-border construction road, and dispatched additional police forces to patrol the cross-border construction road.
Because the Qing court at that time was not in a hurry, this negotiation was discussed for decades, and finally it ended in failure.
In 1899, the Shanghai Public Concession was expanded on a large scale, and almost all the areas involved in the construction of the cross-border road were included in the concession, including this nameless military road.
In 1911, the Nameless Army Road was named Yuyuan Road after a private garden mansion at the intersection of The Road at the eastern end of the road (that is, today's Changde Road), and the owner of the Yuyuan Garden was also prominent in the past, the earliest being Xu Run, a descendant of Xu Da, the King of the Ming Mountains.
Regarding the "growth" of Yuyuan Road again, there is a volume of "Shanghai General History and Appendix" that in 1914 (it is said that in 1911), the Bureau of the Ministry of Works of the Concession crossed the boundary to fill in a small river outside the concession (Tianjibang), extending Yuyuan Road to the west near Zhenning Road to this day. In 1918 (1913), the road was extended to Baili South Road (now Changning Road).
To put it simply, it was the influx of Chinese at that time that led to the explosion of the concession, and the Ministry of Works decided to build a road along the military road to the west, and in 1918, the pattern of today's Yuyuan Road was basically formed.
People who pay attention to my series of articles know that most of the streets in Shanghai involving the concession and the surrounding areas have changed their names, but only Yuyuan Road, which is called for a hundred years, is the only one in Shanghai.
There were many butterflies flying in the alley of the Garden House on Yuyuan Road, and they stirred up the Shanghai storm at that time, naming more than 100 outstanding historical buildings on this road today.

In 1936, Chen Chuxiang, the owner of Huacheng Tobacco Company, built these 16 Spanish-style new-style lane houses in order to build free houses for the company's employees, and the Chen Family Garden at No. 24 in Lane 24 is the most beautiful building in Yongquanfang, like a Spanish castle.
And Huacheng Company produces the most famous "beautiful brand" cigarettes in Shanghai Beach, on the cigarette box, the peach-faced cheongsam beauty Qian Qianyu is holding a cigarette in her hand, the prototype name of the beauty is "Jiang Meiying", the first of the top ten beauties in the old Shanghai, and she also lives in the area of Yuyuan Road after a life of upheaval and misery.
After liberation, Chen Chuxiang put all the tobacco factory and Yongquanfang villas into the public-private partnership, and although he still served as a manager, he no longer had access to the castle-like Chen Mansion, but moved into No. 18, which was diagonally opposite No. 24. Yuyuan New Village, Lane 750, Yuyuan Road, Kang Youwei, the leader of the modern Chinese restoration faction, returned from overseas in 1913, and in 1921, he purchased ten acres of land on Yuyuan Road and built this old site of "You Cunlu", and kang Youwei spent the last seven years of his life in the "You Cunlu".
In 1930, Zhejiang Industrial Bank purchased land here to build 29 fake four-storey joint-style bungalows, No. 11, Lane 750, where Mr. Shen Junru, a democracy fighter of the Seven Gentlemen, once lived, and his eldest son, Shen Qian, also practiced medicine here, and is still inhabited by his descendants.
No. 1015 Yuyuan Road, a three-story garden building was built in 1930, where the well-known financier Zhou Zuomin lived before 1940; in 1947, Li Jishen, chairman of the Central Committee of the Revolutionary Committee of the Chinese Kuomintang, also lived here, and now there is a nameplate of the Changning District Federation of Industry and Commerce hanging on its doorstep.

Taoyuanfang, Lane 1292, Yuyuan Road, built in 1934, its 51-53 was once the residence of the famous progressive politician Shen Junru, and lane 1280 not far away is also a residential area full of historical sense, under the window sills facing the street, careful people can still see the cement cast from right to left "1937" words.
Xinhua Village, Lane 1320, Yuyuan Road, behind the iron gate is a colorful garden and a three-story building. Mr. Shi Jingcun, a master of Chinese modernist literature, lived for a long time before his death, and the former residence of Mr. Qian Xuesen, the founder of the two bombs and one star that I most admire, is also here.
The house number of 111 was hung on the dark iron door, and looking at the five words of Qian Xuesen's former residence, I couldn't help but wonder what anecdotes had happened in the alley.
I don't know how many people can be patient enough to see this, because at this time, my document shows that 4755 words have been written.
And I would like to use a passage from Mr. Qian Xuesen as the closing remark of this small footprint -

A Yuyuan Road, half of Shanghai's modern history, 108 bungalows down, no one doubts how many old memories of the past are hidden in this sentence.
But no matter how many people have had their lifelong regrets and tossing and turning on this road, now, one story after another has gradually dissipated with the fog of more than 80 coffee shops on Yuyuan Road, and often on a Monday, I will come here to buy a cup of thirty-eight dollars of coffee and go upstairs for a weekly meeting.

But when can we let our time go so free that we feel that Shanghai Beach, which is a hundred years old, is not historical?
This is also my original intention of doing the rolling road column, I firmly want to be recognized, Shanghai not only has history, but also the land under our feet is difficult to find like Shanghai, passing by every street is a historical city.
I will drive through more than 200 streets here and tell the history of what I have seen here.
