Overseas network on January 21- Chen Gang, a well-known Chinese professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been arrested for more than a year, and now it has finally ushered in the dawn. The US federal prosecutor proposed a motion to withdraw the US government's so-called "Tongzhong" accusation against Professor Chen Gang on Thursday (20th) local time, which was approved by the federal district court. US media said that this is the SO-called "China Action Plan" of the US government has suffered "the most embarrassing setback".

According to a number of US media reports such as The New York Times and The Washington Post, the US federal prosecutor filed a motion with the Massachusetts District Court on the morning of the 20th, requesting that the US government reject the so-called "Tongzhong" accusations against Professor Chen Gang. The motion states that the U.S. government, having learned new information about the course of the investigation into the case, is unable to continue to adduce evidence to establish its allegations. Massachusetts District Court Judge Patti B. Saris approved the motion the same day.

As for the withdrawal of the case, the U.S. federal prosecutor Rachael S. Rollins said, "As a prosecutor, I always encourage all colleagues in the office to conduct rigorous, continuous review at every stage of the proceedings, and today's withdrawal is the result of strict, continuous review, in line with justice." ”

Robert Fisher, Chen Gang's lawyer, said: "The government has finally acknowledged what we have been saying 'Professor Chen Gang is innocent'. Our defense is not based on legal skill, but on the fact that Professor Chen Gang did not commit any of the crimes charged, it is as simple as that. The New York Times believes that this is the "most embarrassing setback" suffered by the US government's so-called "China Action Plan."

In January 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice's official website said that Chen Gang was arrested "for failing to disclose to the U.S. Department of Energy his work in China and the incentives he received" when applying for funding, and was charged with fraud, failure to file foreign bank account reports, and misrepresentation in tax returns. The Justice Department claims that since 2012, Chen Gang has held and received remuneration for a number of Chinese positions. The Justice Department also argues that Since 2013, Mr. Chen has accepted about $29 million in foreign funding, including $19 million from Southern University of Science and Technology in China.

However, in fact, MIT President Riff issued an open letter last January clarifying that the so-called "$19 million from China" is not Chen Gang's personal income, but because MIT established a partnership with The Southern University of Science and Technology in China in 2018, chen Gang represented MIT as the academic director of the joint center, which is an institutional cooperation rather than individual cooperation. MIT faculty members also issued a joint letter pointing out that the US government's arrest of Chen Gang was interfering with normal academic research activities. (Overseas Network Yao Kaihong)
