High-density mud tiger • impression

Fortunately, I was born in Gaomi. This small county-level city, despite its simple terrain and flat river, has produced new inspiration for me. This inspiration comes from the rich folk art of Gaomi locality: the high dense and lush cavity with a gentle singing tone, the ancient and simple gray Year painting, the fine paper cutting of the knife, and the mud tiger with a cute attitude...

The coming year is the Year of the Tiger, and the protagonist is naturally a tiger. I remember when I was a child, every New Year's Pass, the rows of mud tigers on the village market were neatly placed on the shelves, the shape was generalized, exaggerated, the expression was mighty, the red and green contrast was strong, and the visual impact was very strong, rendering the festive atmosphere of the New Year and becoming a beautiful scenery on the market. The little friends took the pocket money they had saved up every penny of the weekday, selected one stall after another, held the tiger's head in one hand, supported the tiger's tail with the other hand, squeezed hard and quickly with both hands, and the tiger's cry of "whining" stood up. Shop around, and finally select a seller with exquisite paintings, loud shouts, and cheap prices. This mud tiger will play with its friends for a whole year.

In the past, most of my works were mainly to express humanistic feelings and perceptions of plant life. The fertile artistic soil of Gaomi nourishes me, and the rich folk art styles also move me, inspiring my impulse to create based on local culture. The creative inspiration of the mud tiger originated from a symposium on cultural and creative research and development organized by the Gaomi Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, when Director Wang Liping introduced the high-density clay sculpture mud tiger, she was full of childhood memories and emotions, and elaborated on the history, shape, color and regionality of the high-density mud tiger, which immediately aroused my interest, and I had the desire to explore and express it. Therefore, with a bang, he created this series of group paintings based on high-density clay sculptures and mud tigers: High-density mud tigers • Impressions

At the beginning of the conception, it was very tangled, because my work has basically formed a quiet, elegant, fine and beautiful style positioning, and the rough and bold style of the high-density mud tiger, the folk color of big red and green is incompatible, these two very opposite things, combined in the same picture, can they be matched? How to make the picture unified and coordinated, giving people a sense of rationality and comfort? I made an attempt, at the beginning of the first use of scene-based composition to conceive, the tiger on the desktop, platform, and indoor farm supplies, ornaments, etc., made several sketches, the effect feels very general, too rigid, no mood, lack of Chinese painting image aesthetic standards. How to express it in order to make the work stand out, not only highlighting the value connotation of folk art, but also making the work visually impactful? I thought hard and suddenly realized that where there is a lack of breakthroughs, the realistic performance of the scene is too conventional and boring, then it is to break the convention, so I got the creative concept of this group of works: the mud tiger can be placed in nature, and the flowers of the four seasons, birds, insects and butterflies can be spoken; it can be placed indoors, matched with the panes and still lifes... Imaginative, breaking the time and space and the stereotype, the use of modern composition, color block combination and other composition forms to organize the picture, interesting and rich in formal beauty. In the same picture, flowers are also mostly presented in the form of overall color blocks, and the combination of different time and space with mud tigers gives people the space for imagination, novel and chic without being conventional, and also conforms to the aesthetics of Chinese painting.

As for color, it is also a difficult point. Most of my previous works have been dominated by gray tones. How do the bright red, green, yellow and other folk colors on the mud tiger blend with it? In order to unify and coordinate the colors, I have improved the purity of the previous colors, and the flowers and still lifes selected are mainly bright colors, while weakening the purity of the pattern colors on the mud tiger, trying to use the same color of the flowers to unify. In this way, the colors of the picture are coordinated and echo each other, avoiding the feeling of being independent and the language of the picture is not connected.

Of course, this folk treasure with strong regional characteristics also has many elements that need to be excavated and explored. I will continue to study and show its unique artistic charm through the brush.
