Musical "Yoshiya Rental": A New York Literary Youth Group Rental

author:The Paper

In 1996, an original musical was staged on Outer Broadway. No one expected that this humble musical by an unknown composer would change the United States.

It's a musical American has never seen before: young, jerky, reckless, like a burning city fire, with unprecedented strength, hitting the conservative atmosphere of American society, breaking the monopoly of big productions on Broadway, and making the art form of "musical theater" stand with "young people" for the first time.

As of 2018, Jonathan Larson's musical "Yoshiya Rental" is still roaring against the world. It has toured 12,000 shows in 21 countries, and from August to October, it will tour to 7 Chinese cities including Shanghai, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Beijing and Chengdu.

Adapted from Puccini's opera Bohemian, "Yoshiya Rental" combines profound themes, popular stories and popular music to tell the story of 7 Young New York Literary and Artistic Youth unforgettable 525,600 minutes of a year.

They are Mimi, a dancer who bravely pursues true love, Roger who is eager to leave a great song before he dies, Angel, a little angel of positive sunshine, and Mark, a warm documentary filmmaker... They don't know where next month's rent will be, where the inspiration for the next song or painting will be, where the deadly attack of the specter of disease will appear, only song and dance warm the spirit and body in the cold winter, and everyone strives to preserve their dignity while pursuing their dreams.

The subversive rock musical features 28 different genres, from the retro jazz -- "Seasons of Love," the rockpunk-inspired "RENT," and La Vie Boheme, a mix of gospel and rock'n' roll.

After its premiere on Broadway outside New York in 1996, "Yoshiya Rental" won four awards that year's Pulitzer Theater Awards, the New York Theater Forum Award for Best Musical, and the Tony Awards including Best Musical.

In 2005, "Jiwu Rental" was remade into a movie by Hollywood, and it was also this year that the 10th anniversary tour of "Jiwu Rental" came to Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, and actress Karen Mok starred as the heroine Mimi.

Written, composed, and lyricist, Jonathan Larson is the soul of Yoshiya Rental. In the eyes of outsiders, he was a real, impoverished and sick, eternal "bohemian." He poured seven years of hard work into this work, but died in the apartment at the time of the rehearsal of "Yoshiya Rental"—he did not see the complete "Yoshiya Rental", and he did not know its subsequent success, which became the biggest regret since the birth of "Yoshiya Rental".

Tucker and Farina are also in Shanghai

Tucker was born in Los Angeles, USA, and first learned about "Yoshiya Rental" in high school. At that time, she did not understand the storyline of this rock musical, but the lyrics of "Seasons of Love" poked her heart, as if to tell the true meaning of life.

Tucker's electrocution with the musical is still nearly two years old, and the 2017 tour of "Dream Girl" in Seoul, South Korea, was her musical debut. After watching the Yoshiya Rental movie, Tucker felt more like Mimi, and a few days later, she received an email from a production company asking her to prepare "Out Tonight" (a song by Mimi). Before being confirmed to play Mimi, she conducted a total of nine auditions.

She enriched the role with her own life experience, "Everyone has experienced love, and I can empathize with Mimi's love for Roger." When my father died when I was 7 years old, I felt like I was attending my father's funeral when I sang "I'll Cover You." ”

"Yoshiya Rental" often reminds Tucker of the mutual support of groups, unconditional love and a refuge for people from all walks of life, "We need to love everyone around us, treat others kindly and respectfully, and the love you express to others can save their lives." 」 ”

Farina, who was born in Pittsburgh, USA, first learned about "Yoshiya Rental" because of the release of the movie of the same name, "After watching the movie, its melody echoed in my mind for at least a year." ”

Farina had a friend who was a musician for Yoshiya Rentals and auditioned for the crew at his suggestion. Farina and the production team spent a lot of time discussing the character, trying to bring a light side to the character.

For Farina, Yoshiya Rental is like a "celebration" of what he loved and has lost in his life. After the play, "I am full of gratitude to all the people who have left their mark in my life, and I often think of them. ”
