According to Indonesian media reports, on the 18th local time, the Indonesian Parliament approved the "Draft National Capital Law", which stipulates that the future capital of Indonesia will be moved from the current Jakarta to East Kalimantan Province. The new capital will be named "Nusantara", which means "archipelago" in Indonesian.

Why did Indonesia move its capital? From several factors, The Indonesian relocation is something that has to be done.

Jakarta, Indonesia: Severe ground subsidence threatens to be submerged by seawater

The sinking of the ground is one of the most fundamental and unavoidable factors in Indonesia's relocation of its capital. Located in a swampy area close to the ocean, in a coastal lowland, coupled with global warming sea level rise, Jakarta has been sinking at an accelerating rate in recent years due to natural conditions.

The northern coastal area of Jakarta has fallen by 2.5 meters in the past 10 years for various reasons, and about 40% of Jakarta is now even below sea level, and some areas have fallen below sea level by 4 meters and are still falling at a rate of 25 centimeters per year.

Henry Andreas, a professor at Indonesia's Bandung Institute of Technology, said that by 2050, 95% of the North Jakarta region will be submerged by seawater.

Another reason Jakarta is sinking at such an alarming rate is that most of the residents here do not have enough clean water to pump up groundwater in large quantities.

Although 13 rivers flow through Jakarta, most of these water sources are polluted, Jakarta has a large population, a large demand for fresh water, and a steady stream of groundwater stored in the crevices of the rock layer, causing the soil to be compacted and then collapsed, and the land above the groundwater to sink with it.

Jakarta, Indonesia: Densely populated cities are overwhelmed

In addition to the "hard injuries" such as the sinking of the ground, Jakarta also has many big city "stubborn diseases". Jakarta is densely populated and the city is overwhelmed. The city has a population of more than 10 million, and if you count the surrounding areas, the population exceeds 30 million, and the population density exceeds 15,000 people per square kilometer.

Dense populations and a lack of public transport make Jakarta a veritable "city of congestion". In addition, the development of indonesia is uneven, and the Indonesian government hopes to promote the development of the eastern part of Kalimantan. Therefore, the Indonesian government proposed the idea of relocating the capital in 2019 and gradually promoted its implementation.

It is understood that the new capital planned by the Indonesian government is in east Kalimantan province northeast of Jakarta, about 2,000 kilometers away from Jakarta. The Indonesian government envisions a low-carbon "megacity" in the new capital and supports the pharmaceutical, health and technology sectors to promote sustainable development outside of Java, where Jakarta is located.

According to Indonesia's Ministry of National Development and Planning, the total area of the new capital will reach about 2,560 square kilometers, and all the land will be converted from forests.

Indonesia's new capital is located in an area of economic poverty rich in mineral deposits

Kalimantan Island, where East Kalimantan province is located, is largely economically impoverished and many forested areas remain undeveloped. Economic development is limited to the lower reaches of the river and the coastal zone, and the main towns are mostly in the inner side of the estuary. Underground mineral deposits include oil, natural gas, coal, diamond, copper, gold, etc., and the local pepper production ranks first in the world.

The Indonesian government wants to seek funding from the outside world

Indonesia's Ministry of Finance said the development of the new capital will be divided into five phases, the first phase will begin in 2022 and continue until 2024, and the entire development is expected to continue until 2045. According to previous estimates, the cost of this relocation project will be as high as 466 trillion Indonesian rupiahs, or about 203.3 billion yuan.

Faced with a huge budget, the Indonesian government hopes to be able to provide at least half of the funding itself, and the rest is expected to seek funding from the international community.
