Recently, South Korea's JoongAng Daily and the Institute of Asian Studies of Seoul National University jointly conducted a series of surveys and studies on "Interpreting the New Government's Diplomatic Issues Through the People's Hearts", and the results showed that nearly 70% of the people believe that strengthening the ROK-US alliance is more urgent than the denuclearization of North Korea.

"JoongAng Daily" reported on the 19th that the first poll commissioned The South Korean survey agency Research conducted a survey of 1,031 adult men and women over the age of 18 in South Korea through an online survey (connected by SMS and email) from November to December last year, with a confidence level of 95% and a sampling error of ±3.1%.

For the South Korean government, whether it is progressive or conservative, there is no disagreement on the major issue that the ROK-US alliance is the foundation of South Korea's diplomatic security, and this tone will be continued in the new government. This is also reflected in this poll. The diplomatic issues that the South Korean people should pay attention to for the next South Korean government can be summarized as "The relationship between South Korea and the United States is good now, but it should be stronger."

In this survey, south Koreans have made choices about the ranking of diplomatic issues that the next government should pay the most attention to. Among the respondents, the largest number of respondents chose "strengthening the ROK-US alliance", with a proportion of 69.8%; the number of respondents who chose "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" accounted for 61.5%, followed by "strengthening security cooperation between the ROK, the United States and Japan (50.5%)", "strengthening cooperation with ASEAN (46.7%)" and "developing Sino-South Korean relations (41.7%)", the last one was "improving ROK-Japan relations", while only 29.8% of the respondents gave priority to "improving ROK-Japan relations".

Fewer than 30 percent of respondents believe that the new South Korean government wants to improve South Korea-Japan relations, while more than half of respondents believe that security cooperation between South Korea, the United States, and Japan needs to be strengthened, possibly because some respondents believe that strengthening trilateral security cooperation between South Korea, the United States, and Japan has the same background as strengthening the Rok-U.S. alliance.

In fact, when the Moon jae-in administration decided in 2019 to temporarily terminate the South Korea-Japan Military Information Protection Agreement (GSOMIA), there was a sharp deterioration in the ROK-U.S. alliance. This also means that the next administration must seek security cooperation between South Korea, the United States, and Japan on the basis of a cold public opinion toward Japan.

68.2% of the respondents believe that the current relationship between South Korea and the United States is very good, and 3.8% think it is not good. Although the majority of people think that the RELATIONSHIP between south Korea and the United States is very good, 69.8% still believe that the ROK-U.S. alliance should still be strengthened, which means that the next administration cannot be satisfied with the current level of relations between the two countries, but should consider a plan for "alliance upgrading".

In response to the question "What do you think of the current relationship between Korea and Japan", 79.6% of the respondents thought it was "not good", and only 3.1% of them had a positive opinion, especially in the age group of 19 to 29 years old and over 60 years old, the proportion of people who thought that The relationship between Korea and Japan was good was 0%.
