According to the Guardian, Whitehall sources in the United Kingdom admitted that MI5 had conducted an investigation into Malik Faisal Akram, a 44-year-old British citizen who took hostages in Texas as early as 2020, on the grounds that it was suspected that he might pose a "terrorist threat".

The British intelligence investigation into Aklam was "medium-level" and began in the second half of 2020 and lasted "more than four weeks."" But the final findings determined that he did not pose a "terrorist risk," which gave him the freedom to travel to the United States and buy guns.

Still, Akram was listed by MI5 as a "closed subject of interest," but sources said britain did not appear to convey any worrying information about him to the United States until the hostage-taking on the 15th.

The Guardian noted that while the British side declined to say whether MI5 had apologized to the U.S., the recognition was particularly embarrassing for MI5, which often touted close working relationships with U.S. intelligence agencies.

On January 15, local time, a hostage-taking incident occurred at a synagogue in Colleyville, a suburb of Fort Worth in northern Texas. After about 11 hours of standoff, all four hostages were rescued and the hijackers were killed by FBI commandos. The FBI confirmed on the 16th that the suspect in the hijacking incident was British citizen Akram, who entered the United States from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport two weeks ago.
