Tonga volcano erupts to cause oil spills Peru faces serious 'ecological disaster'

author:Bright Net

According to Reuters, the eruption of the Tonga volcano triggered an abnormal wave, resulting in an oil spill accident in a Peruvian oil refinery, involving a large number of animals and fishers, and the Peruvian government described it as an "ecological disaster" on the 19th.

Earlier, an undersea volcanic eruption in Tonga triggered unusually large waves, and an oil tanker leaked while unloading goods for the La Pampilla refinery in Spanish energy company Repsol. Located in the province of Callao near the capital of Lima, the La Pampilla refinery is considered Peru's main oil processing plant.

According to Repsol, about 6,000 barrels of oil were spilled. Peru's foreign ministry also said the spill caused damage to flora and fauna in a 18,000-square-kilometer protected area around the islands and fishing areas.

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded compensation from Repsol for the accident. "This is the worst recent ecological disaster near Lima that has severely damaged hundreds of fishermen's families. Repsol must immediately compensate for the loss. ”

At present, the Peruvian prosecutor has launched an investigation into Repsol in this regard.
