Mitsubishi Motors: Chip shortages are likely to continue to affect Mexico's auto production in the first half of the year

According to reports, the head of Mitsubishi Motors Mexico in Japan recently said that due to the shortage of semiconductors and the impact of the epidemic, Mexican automobile production may slow down in the first half of 2022.

Currently, the global semiconductor shortage has led to a rotational shutdown program in Mexico and other North American manufacturing hubs, which has slowed automobile production.

Jorge Vallejo, president and CEO of Mitsubishi Motors Mexico, said in an interview: "I think we will still be affected, at least in the first half of this year. ”

In addition, the Mexican Automobile Manufacturers Association (AMIA) also pointed out in December that Mexico's automobile production may not reach pre-epidemic levels until the end of 2023 or 2024.

Affected by chip shortages, Mexico's car production fell 2% year-on-year in 2021, the fourth consecutive year of decline, according to official data. Among them, the decline in the second half of this year is particularly significant, with a decline of 16.51% in December alone.

However, Vallejo added that Mitsubishi Motors will outperform its competitors in the semiconductor sector in the coming months due to strong mexican market demand and huge shipments from its Japanese parent company.
