According to the statistics of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Culture and Tourism, a total of 38,366 commercial performances were held in Shanghai in 2021, with an average of 105 performances per day, an increase of 24.7% over the 30,772 in 2020, and the number of performances was basically the same as the 38,960 in 2019.

Among the 38,366 performances in Shanghai in 2021, 8,894 professional theater performances, an increase of 25.6% year-on-year, 15,787 performances in the new space for performing arts, an increase of 70% year-on-year, and other performances such as song and dance entertainment venues and performances in tourist attractions reached 13,685.

The development of new performing arts spaces has become a new increment in the Shanghai performance market. By the end of 2021, the number of new spaces awarded has reached 100. At the same time, many professional theaters in Shanghai, such as Shanghai Grand Theatre, Shanghai Culture Square, and Shanghai Concert Hall, have also actively explored "performing arts +", integrated the development of other formats in a cross-border manner, and continuously explored the diversity of the integrated development of culture, commerce and tourism.

Shanghai's state-owned literary and art academies and troupes have continued to improve their creative performance level during the epidemic. A number of performances with the theme of the main theme have attracted much attention. The Guofeng Music Scene "Sea Folk Music" gives full play to the advantages of Shanghai culture and Jiangnan cultural resources, organically integrates national music with excellent historical buildings, empowers traditional folk music with new technologies, and creates a new landmark of Shanghai cultural tourism.

Shanghai private theater troupes became a new force in last year's performance market, with 91 Shanghai private theater troupes performing a total of 9895 times a year, with a total annual revenue of 256 million yuan. Despite the difficulties brought about by the epidemic, the private theater groups in Shanghai have worked hard to emerge in the fields of original musicals, Shanghai operas, dramas and new space residencies, opening up the market influence of the Yangtze River Delta and even the whole country, and demonstrating the strength and vitality of Shanghai's urban cultural development. Various private academies in Shanghai have invested great efforts and enthusiasm to create red theme works. According to the data, among the nearly 150 original plays and 50 original small drama programs created by 85 private theater groups in Shanghai, the red theme accounts for more than two-thirds of the total number of plays, and the original Shanghai dramas "Early Spring" and "Flying Over the Seventh Bridge" have received wide attention.
