He is the first Chinese artist to win the Academy Award for "Best Art Direction", and is also the interpreter of the "New Orientalist Aesthetics" highly respected by Wu Yusen, Lin Huaimin, Li An, Li Shaohong, Lai Shengchuan and others; he is the top art master of the times and a scholar who will always travel on the road of exploration and breakthrough.

At the age of more than half a hundred, he still works tirelessly, condensing the half-life multi-dimensional artistic creation thinking and aesthetic exploration into a new book "The World Without Time", expounding the "spiritual DNA" of Ye Jintian's art world, and continuing to tell the long-lasting philosophical story of "New Orientalist aesthetics".

▍ Seed: "Always looking for an answer"

Ip kam tim was born in Hong Kong in 1967. His father loved Cantonese opera, so he often followed his father into the backstage of the performance, trying to record the mood and state of the actors when waiting for the scene with the camera; his brother was engaged in design work, he followed his brother to learn painting, feeling and pondering the fun of building the world in the painting with brushstrokes.

In a speech, Mr. Ye talked about his experience of painting as a child, saying that he never depicted people and things in the real world, but was full of interest in some strange birds and beasts, and he was deeply fascinated by these mysterious images.

Perhaps it was talent, the seed of "Divine Thoughts" took root early in Ye Jintian's perception. Wandering is his usual state, and he is often dragged by the rotating fan in the classroom or a bird song outside the classroom, entering a whimsical and wandering world.

At this point, the reality in front of us becomes illusory, and the whimsical world that is imagined and immersed in it is the only reality in the subject's mind.

Under the infiltration of his father and brother, when he entered the university, Ye Jintian did not hesitate to choose the photography and art major, hoping to use visual language to convey his perception and open up the interface from skill to beauty.

In college, Ye Jintian spent all day in the library, read almost all the books about Western art, and embarked on a european study tour in order to immerse himself in learning and understanding Western culture. It was the first time he was deeply shocked by the strength and self-confidence of Western culture, and it was also the first time that questions about the aesthetics and art of Orientality arose.

The ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle constructed the doctrine of "potential and reality", arguing that the former is a state to be realized; just as a seed contains the essence of a plant, growing into a lush tree is only a process waiting to be realized.

For Ye Jintian, the whimsy of his youth and the diligent study and good thinking of his youth are this seed, and the practice and harvest in the following decades are only the natural process of the seed's natural nature.

▍Qingding: "I was really fascinated at that time"

In 1986, 19-year-old Ye Jintian had just graduated, and he was recommended to Wu Yusen by the famous director Xu Ke as the executive artist of "The True Colors of Heroes".

The following year, Ip Kam Tim was invited by Kwan Kam Peng to serve as the executive artist of "Rouge Buckle". "Rouge Buckle" tells the poignant love story between "Ru Hua" played by Mui Yanfang and "Twelve Young" played by Zhang Guorong, set in Hong Kong in the 1930s and 1980s.

The time span of half a century has given Ye Jintian's creation a broad space. In order to give the film a real Hong Kong atmosphere, he tirelessly shuttles through the streets and alleys, searching for a variety of props with a sense of age, looking for memories of the past.

"I was really fascinated at that time," and "Rouge Buckle" made him discover the wonderful feeling unique to the movie, "what it offers has taken you to another world, to a world that you may have felt before, but has not been." 」 ”

In the year 2000, which is well known, Tim Ye ushered in the peak of his film art career. With the art direction and costume styling involved in the movie "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", he won the Oscar "Best Art Direction" in one fell swoop, becoming the first Chinese to receive this honor, and also referring to the world of the "New Orientalist aesthetics" that had begun to take shape at that time.

In this film that makes the Chinese aesthetic shock the world, Ye Jintian deliberately makes all the scenes very large, creating enough sense of space, thus creating a huge tension and supporting the atmosphere of the story for a long time. This inspiration comes from the technique of "leaving blank" in northern Song landscape paintings, where the blurred and hidden boundaries allow the viewer to be immersed in the scene and be able to linger and wander freely.

The most famous "bamboo forest battle" has brought the interest of Oriental culture to the extreme, and the wandering and change of Li Mubai and Yu Jiaolong in space is not a change in the position of the real scene space, but a symbol of the inner struggle, "The western people's play cannot be like this at all."

Since then, "invisible" has begun to run through the beginning and end of Ye Jintian's new Orientalist aesthetic concept, and the answer he has been searching for has finally revealed its core.

In his new book, A World Without Time, he summarizes the language system of New Orientalism as the "Twelve Streams," the primary difference between the visual and spiritual worlds of the East and the West:

"There is an invisible force, and whenever it is about to appear, the flower of the mind appears, it is built in a fleeting eternity, all-encompassing and omnipresent, it is constant in all the world, allowing everything to run freely under its various energies, producing a vast song like the universe."

Unlike fairy tales, life does not end abruptly at its most wonderful moments as a happy ending; life only goes on.

In the 20 years since winning the Oscars, Ye Jintian has continued to enrich the skeleton of "New Orientalist aesthetics", continuing to cultivate in more platforms and fields, so that its flesh continues to touch and break further boundaries.

He cares about the boundary between the virtual and the real, the possibility of the fusion of time and space; he polishes the visual language, more than ever before, he wants to present the whimsical world of his childhood to the world; he works harder on the expression of words.

He wrote "The World without Time", a personal art history that integrates multidimensional artistic creation thinking and aesthetic exploration, presenting readers with a gorgeous and flowing aesthetic world.

In 2020, he directed the first "automatic film", Endless Love. The film does not preset the script, but half-starts a strange journey of time and space interlaced. In the film, he asks , "Can we enter each other's dreams?" ”

The "dream" symbolizes The world of primordial consciousness in Ye Jintian's concept, which is a world before matter. When the boundary between dreams and reality is no longer clear, we will "re-enter time from another dimension, re-encountering a spiritual world in which matter constitutes a previous existence, a world of ignorance that coexists." ”

In 2021, he directed the stage play "Love in the City" starring Wan Qian, and gained a new experience as the general director of the stage play for the first time.

In this 4-hour stage play, with the help of black-and-white films intertwined with stage performances, Ye Jintian allows two completely different time points in the past and present to exist in the theater space at the same time, once again breaking the limitation of the monotony of the time and space sequence.

"The world without time order" is another milestone in Ye Jintian's new Orientalist aesthetics, "New Orientalism has no predestined theme, but has an invisible core, each kind of field has its content, we are now in the field of time and space has the content of the field of time and space, a space a little time, open a field of a place, we can see the metaphysical landscape."

Ye Jintian calls this invisible core "spiritual DNA", with which the artistic presentation of New Orientalism can break through all the boundaries of virtual and real, form and matter, time and space, and touch the infinite zone.

This seems to be exactly the same as Ye Jintian's path to self-realization as a master—starting from the whimsical world of his childhood, he is constantly breaking all boundaries between art and life, and embarking on a new path that has never been seen before.

When asked about the values he was pursuing and the reasons for his choices, Ip replied calmly:

"I want to pursue the greatest possibility of man as a human being, both physically and spiritually." "These are my own choices, I didn't take the fixed and good route, which is also the best for me, it should be, because I walked very well."
