Counting nine is one of the customs widely spread in Chinese folklore. The number nine, that is, from the winter solstice (it is also said that it is counted from the winter solstice day), every nine days is counted as one "nine", and so on. The so-called "heat in three volts, cold in three nine", when the coldest period of the year is "three or nine days". Count nine all the way to "nine nine" eighty-one days, "nine peach blossoms", at this time the cold has run out, the weather is warm. Due to the vast territory of China and the huge difference in climate between various places, only parts of China correspond to the winter solstice day "nine nine eighty-one days, nine peach blossoms, and warm spring and deep sun", not all over the country.

"The method of counting nine is passed down by word of mouth in Chinese folklore, there is a history, there is little record, and there is no exact information as to when it originated. However, at least during the Southern and Northern Dynasties, it was already popular, and Liang Daizong wrote in the "Records of the Jingchu Years": "The number of days on the winter solstice and the number of days of nine nine eighty-one days are used to exhaust the cold." ”
In traditional Chinese philosophy, the dissipation of yin and yang, the dissipation of yang and yin symbolizes warmth and cold. In traditional culture, nine is the pole number, and there is the concept of the largest, most, and longest-lasting. Nine nines, or eighty-one, is the "largest but not". Nine, for the number of "to the yang", also known as the old yang, nine is the largest number, the accumulation of the "number of the yang" means that the yin is getting diminishing, tired to the end of the nine times, means that the cold has gone to the warm, "spring has been deep".
Mechanism of generation
In the winter solstice period, the day is the shortest, the angle of direct sunlight and the ground angle is the smallest, and the ground per unit area is subjected to the least intensity of insolation, so the ground receives the least solar heat every day, and the ground daily heat balance deficit has not yet reached the maximum. After the winter solstice, although the day is growing day by day, the growth rate is very slow, from the winter solstice to the "three nine" period, the average increase is only about one minute per day, at the same time, the angle of direct sun exposure and the angle between the ground is also very slow. The daily heat balance of the ground is still in a deficit, so it continues to lose heat and the ground temperature continues to decline. The total ground heat balance deficit only reaches its maximum value during the "Three Nine" season. Since the temperature of the air is mainly affected by the ground temperature, this leads to the lowest temperature in the "March 9" season (not the whole country, but every year, depending on the region and the age).
In fact, the early winter (Mengdong) period is generally not very cold, but with the passage of time, the cold air frequently moves south, and the temperature gradually drops. In the winter season, the so-called "cold in the three nines", usually not very cold before the winter solstice, the real cold is after the winter solstice, especially "three nine days" and "four nine days".
Calculation method
Counting from the winter solstice day (after the winter solstice, the first day is called "jiaojiu", which means the beginning of the cold), every nine days is a "nine", the first nine days are called "one nine", the second nine days are called "two nine", and so on, counting to "nine nine" eighty-one days, "nine peach blossoms", the weather is warm. Generally speaking, the coldest time is the coldest time of the year; when the "nine nines" are reached, the cold is gone, and the spring is warm.
The correct algorithm for "number nine" is calculated from the first day after the winter solstice, so the specific date of "nine" in each year is not fixed, depending on the day of the first day after the winter solstice. There is also a mistake that the "number nine" is calculated from the day of the winter solstice, and from the day of the winter solstice, the specific time of the "nine" of each year is fixed, and each "nine" is fixed on the 9th, 18th, and 27th days after the winter solstice. Counting the "number nine" from the day of the winter solstice, this algorithm is wrong. As the saying goes: "The summer solstice is three geng into the ambush, and the winter solstice is nine.".
