The legendary life of a World War II veteran from Jiangmen

On June 6, 1944, the Battle of Normandy began. The Battle of Normandy was by far the largest sea landing operation in the world. In this historic battle, there are Chinese from Jiangmen. He is Huang Junyu, who was awarded nine medals by the U.S. government in 2009, including the Order of the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star Medal (the highest military medal of honor in the United States).

Huang Junyu, born in Taishan in 1924 (Chaoqing Village, Dajiang Shuilou), immigrated to the United States in 1938 and volunteered to join the U.S. Army in 1943, when he was part of the 28th Infantry Division of the UNITED States Army, and was the advance force landing in Normandy.

During the Normandy landings, the Allies rushed to capture five beaches while

Huang Junyu's legion was about to land on Omaha Beach, which was easy to defend and difficult to attack.

At dawn on June 6, 1944, Huang Junyu and his comrades boarded the ship and sailed all the way to France. Huang Junyu once recalled that at that time, the wind on the sea surface was about five levels, and the wave height was 12 meters.

10 Allied landing craft overturned and sank because the wind and waves were too great, and hundreds of soldiers on board struggled on the surface of the sea.

The other landing craft also kept shaking, and the soldiers on board almost all of them were sick, and the sea water hit the boat, and the soldiers were cold and wet.

By the time they reached the beach, the soldiers were exhausted.

Huang Junyu's head was a little dizzy

But with good physical fitness and hard training in peacetime, I didn't feel too much discomfort.

After the landing ship arrived at Omaha Beach, the warriors got off the landing craft with rope ladders and ran toward the beach. Everyone rushed to wade to the beach and quickly hid behind a hedge to protect themselves, waiting for orders to attack. This operation was part of the most famous first offensive wave at Omaha Beach.

There were more than 20,000 people on the offensive. Huang Junyu was one of the first warriors to land on Omaha Beach in the first wave.

Shockingly, at the time of landing, the Germans hiding in the bunkers did not fire machine guns at them. Because the Germans did not want to expose the target prematurely before the large Allied forces landed. After the first wave of small-scale attacks, when its follow-up troops landed, the German machine guns sounded frequently.

Intensive strafing and incessant bombardment inflicted heavy losses on the Allies. At Omaha Beach alone, the Allies lost thousands of men

More than 1,000 Germans were killed or missing.

In response to the tragic Normandy landings, Huang Junyu recalled:

After the warship docked on the shore, he rushed down without thinking about anything.

Once you rush out, you can only take care of yourself and ignore others. The Germans were heavily defended, and after the first wave of Allied forces landed on the beach and formed larger targets, they began to use machine guns to continuously strafe the shore for a long time. He was lucky enough to dodge the bullet and rushed into a grass to take a temporary shelter.

Looking back, I saw so many comrades-in-arms falling down one by one, and the beach was full of the corpses of comrades-in-arms, and suddenly their heads went blank. In that battle, Huang Junyu's 187-man unit was the only one left to survive.

The victory of the Normandy landings, which announced the opening of the Allied second battlefield on the European continent, meant that Nazi Germany was caught in a two-sided battle, alleviating the pressure on the Soviet army, cooperating with the Soviet army to forcefully capture Berlin, forcing fascist Germany to surrender unconditionally in advance. The U.S. military thus threw its main force into the Pacific and fought against Japan, hastening the end of World War II.

A scout who always stands in the forward position

After the Normandy landings, Huang Junyu went north with his troops to conquer one German fortification after another.

As a scout, Huang Junyu is always standing in the front position.

Despite the dangers, the attentive Huang Junyu can always do a good job. In the heart of Huang Junyu, who is facing death threats, he always has it

"If you want to die, die as a hero"

Faith.

Under the guidance of this belief, Huang Junyu always charged forward, reconnoitred the road conditions in the rain of bullets and bullets, and led the troops behind him to continuously advance. In the Battle of the Hedge, the Allies had hundreds of aircraft, and in the area in front of the Allies, as well as the area of San Luo to be traveled, they carried out round-robin bombardment, and the heavy artillery exchanges between the two sides continued to exchange fire, and the bullets over Huang Junyu's hidden crater were raining down, but he was lucky not to be hit.

On September 19, 1944, the Battle of The Schütgen Forest was officially launched, the longest battle in World War II on German soil and the longest single battle in the history of the United States Army, with extremely tragic battles and heavy casualties. On the eve of the Allied attack on Germany, Huang Junyu was ordered to lead a patrol into Germany to reconnoiter, the earliest discovery of the German army set up obstacles to block tanks and vehicles, hindered by not knowing how to convey, as a descendant of the dragon, he first thought of the totem of the Chinese nation - the dragon, and created the word "dragon's tooth" when reporting to his superiors.

The word "dragon's tooth" quickly became popular after he used it, and was recorded in the annals of World War II.

Received the Highest U.S. Military Medal of Honor

During World War II, there were as many as 20,000 young Chinese like Huang Junyu who joined the military, and the Chinese population at that time accounted for only one-thousandth of the population of the United States. Among every five Chinese, there is a hot-blooded young man who participates in the battle, which is a good demonstration of the spirit of the descendants of Yanhuang who are unremitting in self-improvement and brave in fighting. However, because the United States was excluding Chinese at that time, the stories of these Chinese soldiers were little known, and they have not been able to get the honors they deserve.

Honor may be late, and the value contained in it is never absent. "I am Chinese, in the eyes of lao Mei, the Chinese are always not favored, and they are discriminated against." I want to show my courage. On the battlefield, even if I knew that I was going to die in the next second, I had to show a heroic gesture so that the Americans knew that Chinese not as cowardly as they thought. Huang Junyu said.

Li Qiang, a veteran media person who has interviewed Huang Junyu more than thirty times and is a senior media person in Boston, commented: "What impressed me most about Huang Lao was his determination to win glory for Chinese and his spirit of not being afraid of death. In addition, on the battlefield, the enemy usually does not fire when they see the first person, but waits until the large allied troops appear before firing, perhaps this unspoken rule makes Huang Junyu, who rushed to the front, escape. ”

One day in 2009, Huang Junyu received a letter from Senator John Kerry of the 112th U.S. Congress, which read: "Arthur Wong of the U.S. Army, today, I proudly announce that you have been awarded the nation's highest military medal of honor, the Order of the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star. Along with the letter came nine medals, including the American Purple Heart and the Bronze Star mentioned in the letter. This also means that after 65 years, Huang Junyu, a combat hero, finally received his medal and bloomed the light of the Chinese.

The descendants of Yan Huang are concerned about the hometown of the motherland

Huang Junyu's former residence is in Chaoqing Village, and the village chief Huang Erqi holds a flashlight in one hand and a photo book in the other, introducing the valuable photos left by Huang Junyu at different ages:

"JunYu is relatively low-key, he has not told everyone about his participation in the war before,

I also learned about it very late through others. There is such a hero in the village, and the big guys are still very proud. ”

Huang Erqi, the village chief, took reporters to Huang Junyu's hometown of Chaoqing Village for an interview

Huang Junyu has always been concerned about the development of his hometown.

The road that the villagers said is called Haichao Avenue, which is about 1.5 kilometers long, and the cement road that connects the village and the outside world is 5 meters wide, which has become the main road for villagers to travel. At the same time, the contiguous fields on both sides also extend along the road, and the rice planted late is growing happily, just like the development of the village.
