Run a free girls' high school against all odds
Walking up the slope along the south lane of Shishan on the edge of Huaping County, is the Huaping National High School where Zhang Guimei once worked, and the girls' high school is next to it. This seemingly inconspicuous high school has a lot of influence in the local area: before the establishment of the women's high school, the promotion rate of the middle school entrance examination in Huaping County was less than 50%, and it reached more than 90% in 2020, and the county's college entrance examination promotion rate has remained the first in Lijiang for many years; in the past, rural girls married early and had children early, and now more and more high schools are reading.
Huaping Girls' High School is a school born out of resistance to poverty.
After her husband's death in 1996, Zhang Guimei was transferred from Dali to Huaping to teach, and poverty in the mountains exceeded her imagination. Some parents brought a bag of steel hammers and corner tickets to pay tuition, some students only ate and did not eat vegetables, and some put rice into warm water bottles the night before to make breakfast. There are more boys and fewer girls in the class, and "some girls disappear when they read and read."
Zhang Guimei realized that improving the education level of mothers in mountainous areas will change at least three generations! In 2002, she began to build a free girls' high school to help mountain girls "on a large scale" and change their fate and family poverty.
In order to change this poor land, she resolutely embarked on the road of fundraising. Red education makes "ugly ducklings turn into swans"
In 2008, the first batch of 100 students was recruited, but the school faced unimaginable difficulties: Huaping Girls' High School had only one teaching building, not even walls and toilets, and students had to go to the adjacent Ethnic Middle School to eat. Several classrooms are the dormitories of the teachers, and the beds are slept in the chase. Before long, 9 of the 17 teachers had gone.
